Toshiba LED

Hi there, I'm looking to move up to an affordable backlit LED (no desire for 3d or smart software) from a CRT which has started to turn strange colours.

I've done a bit of reading and noticed most people seem to recommend Samsung. While I was browsing I noticed this offer on tesco for a Toshiba with a built in dvd player (which would be handy for me).

http://www.tesco.com/direct/toshiba-40d1333b-40-inch-dvd-combi-1080p-full-hd-led-tv-with-freeview/306-9735.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=306-9735

It seems very competitively priced but as it's a new model I'm struggling to find reviews on it. Am I missing a reason why it seems so much cheaper than most other brands?

Thoughts and advice most welcome, don't want my first flatscreen to be a dud but I love a bargain, thanks in advance

Hi, Toshiba are usually a very good make , however....

1/. I would never consider buying a flatscreen tv with built in DVD.

2/. Some of the cheaper Toshiba's are re-badged cheapies.

Just for info. , an LED is in fact an LCD screen that is backlit by LED's.

There are two types.... Full array LED's where the entire screen is backlit by LED's and the cheaper Edge lit LED'S where LED's are placed around the edge of the display and by the use of mirrors the entire screen can be illuminated.
  • I've only ever had two Toshiba TV's. Both have been very badly designed. The first was a rented model and went back as soon as the 12 months was up. The second was earlier this year and lasted one day. Every time you went into the menu and tried to do anything, the set asked "Are you sure?"

Looks alright to me but you can have a Panasonic from Currys (not always known for being cheap) for £400. My sister got one and I found it excellent. I was pleasantly surprised by how good (relatively!) the sound was.

That Tosh is also £350. I've got a 32 inch Toshiba with rubbish speakers and a bit of a slow menu system (delay in changing channels etc).

After experiencing and enduring for a year the “very bad design” of a Toshiba you had rented, you then decided to get (buy?) another Toshiba? :o

Did it not occur to you to ask yourself “Are you sure?”

Considering it was about 20 years between the two, then the answer to your question is "No". I would expect even the most inept company to be able to make improvements in 20 years.

I once had a bad Ford, but it hasn't stopped me having several others since then. I also had a bad Rover once, but they didn't learn from their experiences and I never bought another. Most learn from their mistakes and customer comments.

Will Toshiba go the same way as Rover? Judging by some of the junk they are turning out, possibly.

The mercifully limited exposure I had to Windows Vista did not persuade me to that point of view.

I suppose its choice of CEO has much to do with this and says a great about the mentality of the company.
