Cheap Rail Tickets

Hi,
I,ve been looking to see if i can find any cheap rail tickets to take my nephew to meet up with some friends before the schools go back,
I,ve a feeling i,m too late now as i don,t seem to be able to get deals anywhere and we,re looking at least £60 for a day return from Middlesbrough to Manchester now--even Megabus have no cheap tickets left.
Has anyone any tips--i know i,ve left it late but it was just a extra trip out when i have him thought of last minute, would also like to go to Nottingham but it looks like thats out the question as well.
We can go later on in the year as i say this was just a after thought as a added treat if i can do it cheaply.

You'll probably be better off posting over on the Public transport board -

there's a long 'sticky' thread called something like 'Cheap Rail travel tips' specifically used for queries such as this one....0
