Oooh I like the tea van idea.
I am on a ban from talking about weddings to my other half for the next 24 hours before he disappears off to glasto so I must shhhh for now!
No longer working in Zoology- I am a teacher and now doing a masters in Sexual Health of all things!0 -
Food - how about getting a supermarket to deliver the wedding food. It would have to be finger food, but the order can include savoury, desserts, plates, napkins, party favours, bits and bobs, plastic cutlery - whatever you want. It can be done in an hour or two hour slot, so people can be there to get the stuff out.
It would not cost as much as caterers - and - you will get the loyalty points, combined with an offer it could be a winner!
Love the dress.;)
Love the ideas on here, what fun. :j0 -
May I suggest this book might be of help: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ration-Book-Cookery-Recipes-History/dp/1850748713 I've seen this before in Waterstones and found it fascinating!
Also have a look at the: Customers who bought this item also bought bit as they have a few other cookery book suggestions that fit in with your theme.0 -
ow wow!
"Rationing" can play massive part of my theme! After all I am going for the cheap as chips effect.
I love the book idea- will have see if I can get it out of the library (for ultimate moneysaving). Not having Bread and dripping though! Yuk!0 -
Oh this just sounds better and better! :j I've just noticed a thread that has been nominated for 'post of the month' full of ideas/info/recipes/reminisences of wartime rationing etc. I haven't read it all myself yet but it might give you some more ideas and also people who actually lived through this time who might be able to help.
You can find it here:

It's really weird... I have three friends at work getting married this summer and I don't feel anywhere near as excited about their weddings as I do about yours Miss C!:rotfl:“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

Aww cheers Nenen
.
Well Mr C has !!!!!!ed off to Glasto until next tues so I am going to be having far too much time on my hands to get on with wedding planning. hehe. (Although i am having a girlie "Glasses n' berries" themed party this weekend -pun on Glastonbury geddit!- So I guess that will keep me out of too much mischief.)
Saw this cupcake stand on ebay today. I was going to go for M&S cakes or get Mr C's nan to make the cake but the cakes in this pic look sooooooooo amazing that I am very tempted to do this instead:

although apparently with black icing there is a risk of everyone getting blacked out teeth- hahaha then I suppose that would be in a way in keeping with the theme- bad post war teeth!
For some reason I can't get the link to open but I will have a search about for it. Thankyou so much.
I like to think you are getting more excited about my wedding because it hopefully will be a proper one-off, I am getting soooo bored of the generic centrepieces and favour combos. Yawn. Interestingly it helps you work out who your friends are- those that are laughing at my ideas (and not in a nice way) are likely to lose out on an invite at this rate- just so long as Mr C stays on my wavelength about this it will all be fine.

I love your style Miss Communicate, your wedding sounds fantastic.
In 1940 the Ministry of Food banned icing on wedding cakes. I'm not sure how long the ban was in force, but rationing went on until 1954. Many brides at the time used cardboard cake covers which were 'iced' and decorated to cover a simple and smaller fruit cake. A really economical idea, because you could pass it along to other brides to be reused0 -
How's about a biiig vat of tater (corned beef) hash with red cabbage & beetroot. Certainly in keeping with your post war rations theme & can be made in advance & reheated?0

I don't know if this suggestion is a bit off the wall but I remembered your black and white dress whilst looking for a tiara on ebay and saw this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Black-Sinamay-Top-Hat-Burlesque-Style_W0QQitemZ300121454064QQihZ020QQcategoryZ314QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
Maybe a bit too much but I reckon if it was worn with confidence it could be a killer combo!0 -
Awww as a child Corned beef hash was my absolute fave meal ever. I loved it. Thing is I went off it and now can't bear it so I doubt I will serve it. Also lots of Mr C's family and our friends are veggie or vegan.
Nice idea though.
And I love the hat! I am soooo into the burlesque thing at the min but I have just brought a stunning Tiara which matches my dress which was £12.99 so I may stick with that although the hat may be fun for a "going away outfit" pencil skirt high heels etc. (shame my big bum looks awful in pencil skirts!)
Keep the advice coming guys, i am loving this!0
