It's just a thought but have you tried contacting your local WRVS or WI?
    Womens Royal Voluntary Service
    Womens Institute
From what I can recall at my history lessons many moons ago they were quite prevelant during this era.
I know they are voluntary organisations but they are always looking for fundraising and I'm sure if you explained your ideas / wishes i.e bangers & mash, they could be more than useful.
You never know they might even dress up in there uniforms and help serve out the food if you ask nicely and with the right incentive (£) :D
    Hope this is useful,
    regards

  • Omigod! I love you all! Those ideas are AMAZING!
I love the newspaper idea and will definitely look into it! In fact Mr C is off out tonight so another happy evening googling wedding things will make me smile.

My Tiara got delivered today, it cost £12.99 and it is stunning and looks really expensive and matches my outfit- total spent so far on the outfit- £85! (Shoes, dress and tiara). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290124720665

I am going to have those old fashioned origami folding games on the table http://www.yasutomo.com/project/cootiecatcher.jpg and think I will design them tonight. I love the record idea- will have to see what I can do.....

I have just found out there is a promotion where I work where 99% I am going to be the only person to apply so if I get it then life will become very very busy so the more wedding planning I do now the better!

    Hoooray!
  • Hurrah just had another GENIUS idea. The wedding invites are going to be in the style of the old fashioned penguin books. Title of the book: The Wedding invite. Author: Mine and Mr C's surnames.

I love it. Just designing it now.

Oh Miss Communicate :j :j :j :j :j :j :j I feel so excited for you and don't even know you! Your dress is fabulous :D and I soooooooooo admire you for having this sort of wedding... a really gorgeous, fun-filled day to celebrate love and a life-long commitment rather than an over-commercialised and 'professional' do (not to mention totally over-priced leaving many people with huge debts) that takes all the family/friend spirit out of things.

We got married on a shoestring budget as two students, where everything was done by ourselves and our friends almost 26 years ago... we're still blissfully happy (having weathered some tough times and a couple of storms before I sound too complacent :o ) although several of our friends who had 'perfect' weddings are long since divorced.

I wish you as much love and happiness as we've had... and if I think of any more ideas for the black/white theme I'll let you know.

  • Awww thanks so much guys :)

Design for the invites is almost finished and I must say it looks very cool. Mr C is a copyright lawyer so I need to check with him if he thinks it will be okay and I think I may email penguin to ask them first. (If they say its okay I may sneak a copy onto here to show you guys but to be on the safe side- for now this is the pic I designed my invites on:
    http://kimbofo.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/dayoftriffids_1.gif

The book title is THE WEDDING INVITE
with SURNAME & SURNAME underneath in smaller writing. Then I found a sixties looking pic of a white rose so I put that on it and I am having so much fun editing it.

I guess I will print them with Vistaprint spending about £70-80 which is more than the £30 I had budgeted for seeing as I was gonna make my own with paper mill shop stuff but this is way more fun (and in the end less hassle). Just hope Mr C likes the idea- he is out tonight and on his way back now- will be gutted if he doesn't!!
  • In my googling today I also found another genius idea. They sell mini heart shaped portions of marmite (another british classic) and I am going to buy a box of 100 for amusing wedding favours.

    http://www.unileverfoodsolutions.co.uk/products/portfolio/show/513-0-0-34866.marmite_portions_8g_x_100.html

    This is sooooo much fun.

Oh and on the back of my penguin book themed invites I put two penguins together facing each other within a heart (instead of the oval) with one penguin with a top hat on and one in a veil with tiny wedding rings on and instead of the "Complete" and "Unabridged" that it normally says each side of the penguin it now says "happy" "ever after"
That may be a little cheesy but it looks very cool.
Mr C was very impressed with my invites and he said that it shouldn't really be breaching copyright as no profit was being made and they won't be in wide circulation (he is a copyright lawyer) but to be on the safe side I have emailed them to ask for permission to use it.
  • More on the latest ideas.

Cor i have been on a roll this weekend and just wanted to update my masterplans.

Favours are to be seed packets of sweetpeas (with the seeds being obtained from neighbours or freecycle) in a dark red mini seed enveloped with a stunning black and white pic of sweetpeas and a little poem) My mate is making them as a wedding pressie.

We are probably going to use the vinyl records as placemats idea (there are currently 162 for sale on ebay of 1950's records but they are being sold at £100 so I think I will try freecycle. Cheers for the idea Honolulu baby!

A comedy idea is to get clean empty bottles of HP sauce and have them with a single large rose in. This would make me smile and you can't get much more vintage british than good old HP (though I hate the stuff!) (and is nice coz would be recycling the bottles- although have emailed HP to ask them for empty clean ones as I am not sure I would get through 30 bottles!)

Also think may have centrepieces of small fishbowls filled with retro sweets (fruitsalads, blackjacks, sherbert fountains, dairy milk minatures etc etc.) which would be nice and colourful but also I would hide silly fortune cookie type statements in the bowls as well in a lucky dip type affair.

Also had a bit of a dilemma this weekend as my mum told me that family friends had offered their field for the wedding (but they are in staffordshire and I want to get married in somerset) and there is a marquee we could use for free (but it is only there til this september!- think that is too much of a mad dash!) but then I would be able to get married in my village church which is the most stunning building and where charles darwin got married (as a zoologist I like that) but the thing is I am not religious at all and always swore I would never ever have a church wedding, but then the thought of that church made me have a massive pang as it is my childhood church (I used to go with the family friends who offered us the field) and it would be the only church I would ever consider getting married in. Hmmm not sure I could be that much of a hypocrite but I am suddenly sort of wishing I was getting married in staffordshire and not somerset- then again I hated growing up there.

Ho hum. Apologies for the babbles- this has turned into a bit of a wedding blog- didn't mean it to!
(Cheers for the supportive comments on the other thread Nenen- hope you enjoy the update :))

Yes Miss C I certainly did enjoy the update... please keep them coming! :D just wish I could think of some more ideas for you... am blown away by your ideas so far! Another place that might be worth looking for vinyl records is charity shops as they often have a box full of really naff ones hanging about! The ones on ebay are no doubt the rare (and expensive) collectables!

Do you work in zoology now? Just asking coz my son has just graduated (well ceremony in July) in zoology from Nottingham uni.

Ooh, it sounds great so far!! maybe you could have a tea van as a bar? arrive at the reception on a scooter? Have a candy-floss stall?

    BTW, Your dress is fab!!
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.
