Any keen bird feeders out there?

The red bird is definitely a common linnet, just can't get to take a photograph, it's very nervous.:j0

Will birds eat tomatoes or cucumbers if I put them out in a fat ball feeder ?0

Sorry Cally - I don't know, can but try.
Well the starlings are still around. I haven't filled the feeders for two days and so now the starlings are hoovering up all the dropped sunflower hearts under the feeders.
Don't know why the birds chuck sunflower hearts out and pick a different one but they do, and it's good to see the starlings eat up the discarded stuff.
After posting on another board about my snail problem I'm now going to put them (and the slugs) into a bucket of water and leave them out for the birds. May help the chicks on their way.0 -
Cally you can,t put vegetables in a fat ball feeder unfortunately but they will peck at chopped apple or pears. Fruit generally is slower to go at this time of year when birds need high fat protein products for feeding their young0

I've seen what I think is a lesser spotted woodpecker, and 1 or 2 different breeds of birds in my and neighburing gardens. Fleeting return visits.
I'm hoping to get on with sorting garden to make it more wildlife friendly and put food out, so pleased to Redbirds other than the greedy starlings.0 -
I was in Robert Dyas yesterday and they had bags of Suet Pellets for wild birds piled up by the tills. I can't remember if they were on offer or not.
Growing up we had a tree in our back garden with pale orange berries on it (I don't know what they were) and it got us on a bird 'flight path'. Every afternoon at the same time an absolute feathered horde would descend on the tree for a few minutes and then all fly off again0 -
How exciting to find a thread with other bird feeding enthusiasts - my husband is convinced it's only me!
I have four feeders out, hanging on hooks over branches of a tree. Feeder 1 is a nut feeder, repurposed for suet pellets. It's a fancy lantern shaped one from Amazon. This is ravaged by starlings. It annoyed me at first, but I read that the starling population is declining, so even though they're noisy little beggars who wake me up at 6am with their squabbling, I shall stick with it, even though it's costing me a fortune in suet pellets.
Feeder 2 is a seed feeder. Just a cheap one from B&M with a flip top lid. It's had seed mix from B&M (Not massively popular) and Tesco (More popular). Mostly visited by sparrows, and I've got quite a bold robin who appears every other day and is creeping closer and closer to the house after his feed. The starlings try to get at the seed, but they wind up doing yoga poses because the feed hole is close to the perch, designed for little birds.
Feeder 3 is a fat ball feeder I got from the Ideal Home Show a few years ago. Pigeons like this, and I've seen starlings on it too. Collared doves lurk beneath it in the hope of crumbs.
Feeder 4 is ancient, and was left here by the previous owner. It's a cheap plastic peanut feeder. I don't think any bird has used it, because the food level has never gone down. I'm hoping to replace it soon.© Cuilean 2005. Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.0 -
When I filled the empty feeders yesterday early evening (been away) a flock of baby starlings landed, must have been about 20 of them at least  I scared them away three or four times
and they haven't come back yet today. Perhaps they have flown away or perhaps they'll chance their little beaks later in the afternoon. I'm on the watch!

I'm glad I'm not the only starling hater on here! The adults are bad enough but when they descend with the juveniles it's mayhem. Fighting and squabbling over the feeders. A pair of young ones were actually dive bombing a poor woodpigeon sat peacefully feeding on the seed tray. It looked frightened to death. I am tempted to get a peashooter to aim at them from the kitchen window!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

We have a song thrush nest! It just outside our garden in a tree belonging to a neighbouring garden of several acres but our house is the nearest to it so I think we can claim it0
