We grind up peanuts in one of those mini food processors and mix them in with bird seed in the bird feeder tubes. The undoubted favourite food this time of year is the suet pellets. That feeder tube has to be refilled a couple of times a day. It's costing us a fortune !!

Great idea Primrose! I haven't got a food processor, but I bet I could smush them up a bit with the side of a knife :j

    ETA:

Thought I'd mention that I got a lovely surprise this morning whilst glancing out of the window into the back garden, Goldfinches, Blue and great tits! I've only had sparrows so far, so it was a real treat!

Also, after having no attention on the feeding station that I had set up at one end of the garden, I thought I would chance moving one of the hanging feeders to somewhere else in the garden (which to me felt like a more open spot). Now almost all of the feed is gone!! I don't know what was wrong with that particular secluded spot at the other end of the garden, but they didn't like it!!

Well I think my mystery bird is growing into either a blackbird or thrush. Still undecided. His beak is way longer than that of a blackbird still.
Lots of tits and robins still visiting, blackbirds and collared doves too but not many finches at all. Dunno is have increased in number too. Had a beautiful long tailed tit last week which was a delight.

    !

Putting them in a strong polythene bag and smashing them up with a rolling pin would probably be easier as you can do more of them at one time.

Fay - I am going all out with this and predicting it's a Blackbird.
Also love the long tailed tits.
    Back on the trains again!

  • Fay, did you post a picture of the bird?

No I haven't managed to get a picture of him yet, my phone doesn't get close enough and neither does my camera. I need to get hubby to take one. The bird is a really regular visitor so I'll try to get him to snap him.

There is a family of new starlings which has taken to eating the sunflower hearts. I don't want to encourage them as they bring their friends, but I know that I shouldn't only 'like' the little tits and goldfinches and siskins.

It's not easy this bird feeding lark.

Yes, me too! There is an inter-baby-starling battle for the suet blocks. This morning there was a feisty youngster seeing off all his brothers, sister and relatives to keep possession of it until it was all gone!

Think there's a starling convention going on in my back garden, and they're so blooming noisy!

What with the bellowing bull in the front field it's bedlam here today.

I've now caught a glimpse (twice) of what I believe to be a common linnet, such a lovely colour and not as chunky as a robin. I hope it comes back.

Whilst out there I've collected the morning slugs and left them in a dish for the birds, it makes me feel slightly mean(I could never be a Buddhist) but they're eating my plants. Perhaps the starlings will take them.
