  • For anyone near a branch of the Yorkshire Trading Outlet their fat balls are the best buy I've seen since the Factory Shop offer finished. 2 bags of 6 for £1. I got 10 packs and refilled my tub. 60 fat balls for £5.

Our little gang of Goldfinch have left us, not seen them for a good few days. They must be too busy looking for mates and nest building. I miss seeing them but it saves us a small fortune on Niger seed!

I was laid awake at 5.30 this morning listening to the most amazing dawn chorus I've heard this Spring. It sounded like the Blackbirds leading it as usual.

TA - you've reminded me to hang the nest boxes though its maybe too late already. Will try and see if any of them get used.

There was one lonely chaffinch singing its wee heart out last night. At first I couldn't see any birds at all and then spotted it high in the source tree puffing it's rusty brown chest out. A wee smasher. The best thing Mr Gers did was set up the birdcam so we can watch from anywhere.
  • My DS bought me a nesting box with webcam and you wouldn't believe the laughs it's given me!! When I connect the USB to my laptap the only picture I get on screen is me!! Why? I'm not inside the nestbox! It sets me off in hysterics every time I try. If anyone knows where I am going wrong then please tell me!! It's going to be passed nesting time and the nestbox will still be in it's fancy box.

I'd be asking over in the techie section - seems a setting is wrong! Or, it could be that you need to disable your laptop webcam if you have one? A little hole at the top of your screen?

I've got a friend with a nestcam and it was lovely to see the action, even though all the six blue tit chicks died. That part wasn't lovely! My cam is inside the kitchen pointing out the window to the three feeders on a pole. Sometimes it's like a scrum out there.
  • We moved into this house about 10 months ago and brought our feeding station with us. We get loads of birds including robins, tits, wrens, goldfinches, blackbirds etc. Food doesn't last 2 minutes! Looked out of the window the other day and counted 5 robins around the feeders, that's the most I've ever seen together in one place! Also saw a pair of robins "twitterpating" on the wheelbarrow:o So hoping they are going to nest in the garden

We get lovely red squirrels here and i really don't mind them raiding the peanut feeder.

Only seen one robin at a time and one male blackbird too. There could be more than one but I can't tell.

Think I spied my first long tailed tit this afternoon. :j

Got my bird boxes up on the garden walls, not sure if they'll be taken this year but am hopeful.

The blackbird came to visit, he likes being in the bushes or vegetation looking for morsels so I scatter some mealworms there.

There are 3 robins feeding beneath the feeders at the moment plus a couple of blackbirds :)

I've never put up nestboxes but I was given one last year and have been wondering where it could go. I think my trees aren't the best place because my female cat is a hunter, preferring rodents but occasionally taking a small bird.

Thrilled this morning to see a reed bunting checking out the long grass where I throw mealworms for the blackbirds. He's a rare visitor here. The blackbirds did quite well before the jackdaws noticed, and then the magpies, but by then the chickens were on their way!
  • I spent a lot of the morning watching a female blackbird make a start on building her nest in the ivy not far from our kitchen window. She built her nest last year in almost the same spot - about 4 ft from the ground. We were permanently shooing off the local cats that were doing their best to get up the ivy. Sadly one cat must have managed it whilst we were away for a few days and the nest was empty and the blackbird gone when we got back. So I am quite sad to think she is going to all this bother building her nest and getting it just right, for the same thing to happen again. The nest last year really was a work of art.
