Is a Prepaid Mastercard classed as a Credit or Debit Card?

I'm about to pay for something over the Internet, using my Prepaid Mastercard.

According to the company I'll be paying, the charges are Debit Cards 0%, and Credit Cards 1.25%.

Even if classed as a Credit Card, the charge will only be about £3-75 (so not the end of the world), but I was wondering.

It is a debit card only - so no additional charges should be made. There is no such animal as a Pre-paid credit card!

    I didn't say there was.

I just wanted to know how the retailer/bank would treat it.

Who knows? Some retailers reject Pre-paid cards out of hand for their own reasons (car rental is one). So it pays to have Plan B.

No, it may be treated as a debit card generally but actually it's a third kind of card - not debit, not credit but prepaid.

Try to use a prepaid card at HMRC to pay income tax or your local council to pay council tax (ours anyway) and they treat it as a credit card and want to charge extra. They say they haven't got the necessary software.:(

Try to use one at Aldi (probably Lidl too) in England and you''ll only end up holding up the queue while they explain it's not a debit card. :rotfl:

Just my experience with a prepaid MasterCard. ;)

  • I don't know. I haven't paid yet.

I'll be loading it tomorrow morning, then paying tomorrow afternoon.
  • Just paid and it went through as a Debit Card.

    No handling charge.
