Free Gas???

Thought my gas supplier was the same as electricity supplier but just got my annual paper statement which just shows electricity. I moved into my new build last year and put both through EDF. Just called the national meter line and they dont have any supplier or meter recorded at my address for gas and I now realise I have not paid for any gas since changing suppliers a year ago when I first moved in. The point is my property is still receiving gas!

Dont know where I stand with this, can it be backdated? how do I go about this whole situation?

Thanks in advance
Sam

If you are getting gas, then yes you are getting gas.

My advice is that you get on to the building company and ask some questions about who the gas should be with. You may also want to have a natter with your neighbours.

If you don't have a supplier, you do know that national grid can bill you and it wont be on a kind rate and they go back 6 years
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • Thanks for the advice. Not sure who I go to get this sorted. We moved from the original company that gave us gas to EDF but just realised they are only providing electricity to us and the original company informed me they are not supplying me when I ask. Not got a clue where to go :-(

You don't say if you've located the gas meter - there should a label with the meter number (MPRN) on it?

The first line of EDF bills says' this is your gas bill' or 'this is your electricity bill'. If you opt for single billing it says 'this is your gas and electricity bill.' So quite how you could think that an electricity bill included gas escapes me. And didn't you think that the bills were unfeasably low? Since your gas bill would be approximately twice your electricity bill in a property with gas CH and DHW, the bill would be about a third of what would be expected.
Even if the back billing rule applied here, which I doubt, they can still back bill you a year.

Hmmm - Have I got this right?
In your post #4 you say you were being supplied Gas, (and paying for it?), by the supplier who came with the dwelling - You then switched both Gas & Elec to EDF who have failed to bill for the Gas.

You also say you checked the National Data base, ( By phoning 0870 608 1524 ? ) who say they have no record of your meter.

Get onto that original supplier asking when they first came responsible for the gas supply to the property, and the date they transferred it to EDF - ( they are legally bound to keep these records) - Armed with that info.get onto EDF

New builds are rarely actually registered with a gas supplier and the onus is on op to have registered with one, It is important that is down asap for lots of reasons not least that eventually you will be cut off as the transporter is not getting paid to maintain the pipes, no metering company is responsible for maintaining meter, and in the case of gas emergency it will be capped as no emergency repair contract for the meter either,
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.

If you have any numbers (6-9 digits) on your meter, they may assist NG with finding the meter.

I would also suggest a discussion with the home builder to find out who installed them and when plus if the supply on your estate is provided by an Independent Gas Transporter.

Are your neighbours affected by this?

You say you moved to EDF, but from which company?

Was that original company billing you for gas?

EDF when taking over would/should have asked you for your gas and electricity meter readings.

You are probably aware of the billing code which only allows companies to backbill 12 months - where the company are at fault.

However that backbilling provision of billing code specifically excludes cases where the customer hasn't taken measures to ensure he is being correctly billed, and gives an example of a new build.

If the gas supply is listed as "shipperless" with national grid then until you instruct a supplier to take over the supply you will not be charged for any gas used. however, "shipperless" sites are very rare nowadays
