Do we need to take beach towels??

This is why you did not get towels - you were at lower end 3* resorts. It is the norm for higher end hotels.

We have always had beach towels provided but we do only use 4 or 5* hotels. However, I pack a beach towel for each of us to use by the pool or the beach just to distinguish our "camp" from every other one!

When we go for a dip or a drink, we leave our stuff so having our own brightly coloured towels on the lounger really helps. Of course, we always use their towels for drying ourselves or to lie on. I would hate to go back to the days where a beach towel had to last a whole week:)

I line my suitcase with a beach towel. Line the bottom, then fold the rest over the top of your clothes. I've done it ever since my suitcase was sitting on the tarmac waiting to be loaded at Sydney Airport for several hours due to a delay. There was a huge storm, the rain soaked through the fabric of my suitcase and everything inside was wet.
