Ok, in that case I don't know!

I assumed as you said 'statement' you meant a normal bank statement, rather than the letter that you've quoted here.

But the letter is clear that the account has been closed. I'd withdraw the £1.91 and re-close the account if I were in your position.

It's actually going to work in my favour, I think. I didn't realise when I closed my account that my arrangement to pay from 4 years ago would stay on my credit files for 6 years after the closure date.

If the account shows as being reopened on my credit report rather than as a new agreement, then I'll just keep it open for another 2 years until the AP markers drop off and then close it :p

I just don't like a bank doing something seemingly random and not being able to explain why.

Another thing that slightly annoyed me was when I rang up internet banking they wanted to know what year I opened the account to get through security. How the heck should I know that.. :rotfl: I guessed and said 'I dunno about 10 years ago...' and I was right :D

..least of all the account holder..

    Indeed!

I closed my account in March and the next thing I knew about anything changing was a debit card coming through my door for no apparent reason in July.
    What will your verse be?

Must say, I had a similar experience with Halifax. I had loads in one of their savings accounts when they still paid a decent interest rate. When the rates plummeted, I went into a Halifax Branch to close the 'Online Saver', and they moved the entire balance to my Halifax current account in July 2012 (from where I moved it to another interest-paying place outside the HBOS/Lloyds group).

Much to my surprise, this 'Online Saver' suddenly popped up again in my HBOS online in June 2013, with a couple of quid in interest. So they hadn't actually closed the account, and they hadn't credited me all the interest that had been due in July 2012. I can't get too excited over it because it's a couple of quid for me only - - but it's a pretty poor show if a bank isn't able to close an account [particularly if that same bank has a switcher offer that only works if the old account gets closed, lol]

I also had a Halifax credit card at some stage in the early 2000s. I cancelled it in 2004. The card kept showing in my Halifax online banking until very recently. Initially, I kept asking them to remove it. But they didn't, and I just gave up asking them once the card had dropped off my credit files [on which it had been showing with a zero balance for eons. Luckily, the credit limit (£9K) didn't impact my ability to get any other credit I was applying for in the meantime]

So, going by my experience, Halifax seem to be somewhat overly attached to their customers. But if you keep ignoring their pursuits, you can eventually get rid of them, it seems.....

They did have an issue a short while back where they found they'd under-paid interest on a number of accounts - the account may have been re-opened to accept the additional interest payment that you were due.

I don't believe you have any way of knowing this unless you live with the OP and even then .......... What I'm trying to say is anyone can read posts and if a registered user you don't have to be logged in to do so.

I agree with the sound advice from Opinions4U. I would definitely pursue the complaint in writing. In my own experience trying to deal with my complaint by phoning has been a nightmare. I was given completely wrong information in one phone call, which the bank then disputed I'd even been given. Luckily I'd recorded the time of the call and the individual's name (by this time I was losing the will to live). The bank has since traced the phone call and apologised to me and hopefully they will target training!

The other point I would make is to be persistent as the first letter of reply I received from the bank was obviously just a standard pro forma which didn't address my specific complaint.

The OP is either a troll or very rude.

Or there's an outside chance that they're still on hold to a call centre.
