I got the same letter as well, it is frustrating but they did at least give over 12 months notice which is good. I am going to start looking at other accounts now as I already have a 123 but need the travel insurance part (which 123 doesn't have). I would also like to see if I can get a combined benefit account that does breakdown, phone insurance etc as well. I am sure I'll have to fund that but this is a good kick to move on!

Nationwide FlexPlus is offering these for £10/mth but obviously you have to check that the T&Cs suit you. You also get 3% AER on up to £2.5K.

That looks interesting to say the least, thanks for the link. £120 per year but if I leave some savings in the account then the interest may go towards the funding of this.

  • Has anyone ever tried to claim on the Travel Insurance from the banks? We did years ago and lets just say, it wasn't worth it.

Now we take out our own travel insurance and it provides far more than what the Bank travel insurance covers?

    Just a thought...

We claimed about 5 years ago when my Wife was unable to travel, our Doctor confirmed this in writing and we were refunded the full cost less the excess, this was through Alliance and Leicester. We received about £1300.

This is good. Looks like your claim was pretty clear cut.

We had to claim when former husband got ill in Florida. Thanfully we were able to pay from our funds and then claimed when got back as had been advised when I made the phone call from Florida, thank goodness I had the nouse to record this conversation.

We got more help fron the airline regarding his flight back back to England and the cancellation of the original flight back home due to his illness.

No payout as they claimed it did not cover outside the EU.. sure enough found the weasel words in the small print, yet the adviser on the other end when I phoned said all expenses would be refunded on production of receipts... I clearly stated I was phioning from Florida and the bank were aware of the trip to Florida, we had done everything we were supposed to do before we left England.

I have often wondered what would have happened if we had not been able to pay first... Oh this was not a pre-exisitng condition.

That really doesn't sound like weasel words in the small print - more like the basis of the entire policy. Free European travel insurance is how it was pitched to me

OK they were thick about where 'Florida' was - which is presumably why you got paid rather than sticking to the policy - but there are Floridas in Europe.

Moral is to read the T&C

Except read the insurance policy to ascertain precisely what you are covered for and where. Even if the bank were aware you were in Florida US, that detail would not be known to the insurance company.

Santander did the World travel insurance cover with the plus 50 which, of course is one of the accounts that's being finished.
