There are no UK (or IoM, CI) numbers starting with 06.

The 06 range was supposedly reserved for migrating 070 numbers to but, as with most things with Ofcom, nothing ever happened. It remains unused.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Beware of ignoring calls that display as WITHELD.

Many genuine callers choose to withold their numbers, including NHS and other government departments, as well as large companies with a phone system with many extensions.

This is because calling back on that number and locating the extension that rang you would be almost impossible.

Imagine if the call was from A&E at a hospital to tell you of a loved one being admitted after an accident.

So you are saying that there is nothing that anyone can do to stop these pains in the neck ?

    I totally agree - but how ?
If the phone numbers that they use are faked - they may not even be in the UK ?

Since moving in June and having to go with BT for business reasons, we work from home, we are being plagued by silent calls from a Turkey-based number; 901902 756746. They don't call every day, but they do call most days, often several times a day.

Typical, BT are "very sorry, but since its outside the U.K., they can do nothing".

Our landline phone is quite old, so I'm going to replace it shortly with one that has caller ID. In the meantime, I've got us registered with both TPS and a service called Silentgard http://www.silentgard.com/register.aspx. The latter is to help stop these silent calls. Any one can register, so give it a go if you are being bothered.

The next nuisance number started calling my mobile about three weeks ago. Again, not every day, but several times a day when they do call. This number is all over the nuisance call/look up services. Its a debt mgmt outfit and the number (in my area anyway) is 01902 690105.

I've asked both politely and rudely to be removed from their calling list, but to no avail. My mobile number is registered with TPS and has been since I got the phone two years ago, but I may just get a new SIM if this doesn't soon stop.

I have reported both numbers to the ICO.

I am reluctant to sign up on line for any of these "third party" call blockers (other than TPS) - How do they have access to the phone system and how do you know/trust them ?
Sorry if this worries you - but it should do ......
I would like to add - nobody does anything for free these days !!
