Have just received a book of Christmas first-class stamps and a diary. The gifts were unexpected as currently doing unaddressed mail and correctly addressed mail, and not the main panel.

    Nice surprise.

But the Post Office assistant wouldn't let me use my stamps to send a special delivery parcel today. When I asked the reason, she said that it is because I am buying a label, which is totally separate from a parcel ... :D

    I don't get it either ...

No reason why you cant use stamps...thats just the PO making up a reason....
I always use my stamps for parcels ...putting on to the nearest value and topping up with any price difference...usually pence.
You can also put more stamps on than the cost...but you wont get a refund on the difference.

The PO assistant didn't mention anything about an APL stamp, I just don't understand why they refuse to accept stamps for an item which is being posted.

    It's not logical!

They never used to be so dogmatic, the assistant (although pleasant) is a real jobsworth. I keep wondering whether to try and find out from Royal Mail the real situation regarding this issue.

Next time you have to post something and want to use stamps hand ovcer the parcel and ask how much it will be as you have some stamps to use towards the cost....they should ask you what type of stamps you have and some nice ones even work out how many you will need...

Never fails for me because I tell them its the only method of payment I have with me!

stamps is stamps and they can certainly be used to send items through the royal mail...the only thing you cant use stamps for is parcel force which is slightly different....so heavier items are excluded.

    Thanks again LEJC.

A few months ago I did manage to get away with this. I had been walking the dog, and never carry my purse. She had to accept the book of stamps. But she was quite annoyed, and implied that she was only doing it as a favour.

I daren't risk it again, she'll have me barred!

The parcel was quite small - an old mobile phone which I had sold on Ebay. But I could have saved £7.25 special delivery charges if she hadn't been so awkward.

I need to find out the official stance on this.

My husbnd posted a special delivery parcel using the large postage stamps. The assistant counted how many he needed to the nearest stamp value and he only had to pay a few pence to make up the full price.

It did mean there were quite a few stamps across the top of the package which a watch being returned for repair so not a large package

    Thanks for your comments sheramber.

Previously the PO assistants have done this, but this particular assistant's attitude is that she is only allowing as a favour!

She was in militant mood today, and wasn't budging!
  • Received my brown envelope! But it didn't include the Guidelines Booklet, so I've emailed & will try phoning as well. How do I log in? Will the booklet tell me this? Many thanks :)
