Based on post 10 I would say the last person you spoke to doesn't have a clue.

Customer facing staff cannot make any changes to complex metering account. This is what you have (super tariff). This is so that clueless staff like the one you spoke to cannot do too much damage.

If you have a look at online tariffs with NPower and other suppliers you will see a term saying something like not available with a non standard meter.

Also I would be ASTOUNDED if direct debit was not cheaper. I believe there are some changes in the pipeline regarding direct debit discount being applied daily rather than once per year.

It irks me when I know some staff try really hard to do a good job (like whomever replied to the email) but some either don't know enough or just don't care.

If you try to change supplier without changing the meter, and get another clueless individual, they will tell you everything will be fine and then in a few weeks you will get a letter saying they are very sorry but they can't take it as there is a related MPAN, they can't support this tariff and they are sending the supply back to Npower.

Well finally someone with a clue at Npower re-contacted this afternoon.

Basically as the other posters above confirmed as he has a 'non standard' meter that gives him the cheap 'afternoon boost' of heat, he is unable to move away from the non standard 'Standard Super Tariff' onto a cheaper tariff and he is on their cheapest 'Super Tariff' (or at least he will be when he starts to pay by Direct Debit).

His neighbour who lives in the adjoining bungalow did have his meter changed two years ago and is on NPower's cheapest E7 tariff, however the neighbour has to use additional heating in autumn/winter/spring on an evening/early night at full 'day rate' and this has more than wiped out the savings he made going onto the standard E7 tariff. The neighbour would like to move back onto his former 'Super Tariff' but cannot now he has moved away from it.

At least with the cheap 'afternoon boost' my brothers bungalow remains warm throughout the day/evening/night.

So with NPower he is rather stuck. Do any other companies offer an equivalent tariff to this Npower 'Super Tariff'?

In anycase as mentioned above he is changing over to paying via Direct Debit which will give him as saving of £40.00 per annum, but that is about it.

He is registered for their 'Priority Response Service' which means they will read his meter quarterly so his Direct Debit payments should be relatively accurate.

Many thanks to everyone who has posted in response to my earlier postings.

I wouldn't recommend even attempting to switch supplier with a non-standard meter. Attempts to do so invariably ends in tears.

The new rates including VAT in comparison to the current prices (in brackets) are:

New Daily Standing Charge: 21.5p (was 23.0p)
New Day rate: 19.53p (was 15.01p)
New Night Rate: 5.95p (was 5.95p)
New Heat Rate: 6.89p (was 5.86p)

The new unit charges (except for Night Rate) as you can see having increased significantly, particularly the Day Rate. Perhaps my brother should become nocturnal??

As long as his day usage doesn't alter the new tariff does not seem too bad. His previous 'standing' charge was £84 per annum (728 x the extra 11.5p he paid for those tier 1 units) whereas it is now £78. His day unit rate has jumped up 4.5p but at his usage that is an extra 66p per week. Annoying but not a crazy increase.

It is for others with a more average usage that the new tariff will be worrying. Your brother does not seem to do much cooking. How did he manage to keep his day usage under 1500 kWh?
