I can't see it either, yes they are losing money but they are currently implementing cost cutting to rein it in. In Australia they are currently expanding. TBH I don't believe the French government would let PSA fail, if the s*** did hit the fan, they would just bail them out.

They're not losing money -- they're heamorrhaging money. And the French government are largely to blame -- putting barriers in the way of Peugeot closing factories, which is only accelerating the decline.

If they haven't turned themselves around in the next six months, most analysts are saying that takeover is the only option for them.

They wouldn't be allowed to under EU competition law (or are we the only ones who take any notice of this?)

Peugeot are the 21st century equivalent of British Leyland. I drove my mother's 207 and I thought it was a really nasty little car, and the pedal positioning positively dangerous. Almost any other small hatchback will be better.
    Already happened apparently

Even if they do get taken over, the brand will survive. Unlike Rover and SAAB. Unless you count Rower. ;)

Oh I'm not saying they'll disappear as such (far too big for a start) -- but the Peugeot we know today is very unlikely to still be around in 5 years.

I think they should focus on the smaller cars, I know the bigger ones sell fairly well on the continent but they are competing too much with VAG. Although saying that VAG make some decent city cars now.

!!!!!! it, free insurance and 0% finance all round, well it worked for the Saxo ;)

Don't know about the 207, but I had a 52 reg 206 for 10 years with zero issues, just normal maintenance stuff (service, tyres, brakes, etc) and it never failed an MOT - yes, I know, I must have had the *one and only* Peugeot ever built properly ;) Mine was the xsi so 1.6L, and I think about 35 to 40mpg average over a tankful.

OP you might want to look on Fuelly and Honest John to have an idea of fuel consumption for the cars you're looking at - though obviously it can vary quite a lot depending on driving style and types of journey
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

There are bad apples in every cart.

I have driven both the 207 & the Clio they are pretty much like for like in terms of motoring costs, The Renault will be slightly cheaper, MPG & tax wise.

Drive both & find the one that suits you best. Personally I always think the 3dr versions have rather large doors on both cars.

Buy the lowest miles you can, buy with comprehensive service history, buy with 2 keys & buy with an HPI clear certificate.

I'm not saying you'll be trouble free, things go wrong whatever, but, if you do a little homework & put your initial checks in place, then you should be okay. if you smell a rat, walk away immediately.

Neither. I'd go for a Fiesta or Polo. It will only be a matter of time before things start going wrong.

Ive driven a 207 and its fine, no issues (just usual like service etc). My 206 is still going strong, again its just the service, mot, tyres etc that need replacing.

VWs are no more reliable than any of the other European brands. For reliability look at the Yaris, for good value check out the Fabia.
