    I'd suspect the aerial. Do you know anyone who has a plug in network card you can borrow? Loads on Ebay for a couple of quid.

    Try going into Device Manager and delete the WiFi card (don't panic!).

    Restart and it should find the card and reinstal the drivers for it.

    Download inSSIDer from Metageek (FREE) which will enable you to view all wifi networks local to you.

    I'm not sure of the key combination or button on a PB but it is possible to turn the aerial and the wifi off.
