SKY TV Movies

I joined SKY two years ago and had a nightmare with them regarding set up. They had to install a new line over the house and kept sending the wrong people out who weren't flat roof trained resulting in me missing 6 days of work. When the problem was eventually resolved I didn't pay for a number of months and they offered me free movies.

I have just realised that I have been paying for SKY movies now for 18 months. I have never agreed to have SKY movies or pay for it but they have been charging me for 18 months off the back of giving it to me for free.

What I am entitled to?

Nothing, because you failed to cancel at the end of the free period when the charge kicked in. Surely you didn't think that thy were offering you free Movies for life? It was probably a 12m movie package with 3 or 6 months free.
You obviously did agree to have Sky Movies, because you accepted that sweetener as compensation for your missed days.
Have you not checked your Sky bills in 24 months then?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • It was never made clear to me how long a period I was getting with the movies or that I'd have to cancel anything. I never asked for them they were just offered to me.

I don't get paper bills and I've not realised that the subscription had increased after the first 6 months as they were giving me money off due to the problems they had caused. I don't even use the movies I rang up on another matter found out that way.

    Nothing, nada, hee haw.
  • Well actually a written apology, £100 credit, half price line rental for 12 months and a 10% discount on TV for 6 months.

    Wrong.

you asked what you were entitled to, the answer was nothing.

just because you got something, doesn't mean you was entitled to it

You are entitled to now give Sky 31 days' notice to cancel the Movies pack (or your entire account). That is all.

Indeed so. Further use of the Movies after the expiry of a free or discounted period is regarded by Sky as implied acceptance of the terms of the contract to continue. And would be construed as such by a court.

(Actually, what you should have done was to give Sky 31 days' notice to terminate the Movies one month before your free or discounted period was due to end. It has ever been thus.)

It would have been included in whatever paperwork Sky sent you at the time. It always is: they need to do that to cover themselves legally. In order to ensure that you notice it, Sky usually puts it helpfully in minute print on the back of a sheet of paper telling you about how wonderful Sky is.

Everyone with a Sky account and access to a computer should check their account online every month to ensure that Sky is not getting up to any hanky-panky. It shows clearly what you are subscribed to, what it costs, what your next bill will be and the current state of your account financially.

Note that if you intend to cancel your account completely you need to save and print out these details just before you give Sky its 31 days' notice. Sky has a nasty habit of denying you access to details of your account during the period before termination.

As has been stated oft before, beware a Murdoch bearing gifts – particularly if it's "Toxic" Jamie. I suspect that the story of the Trojan Horse was one of the first lessons that Rupert taught him as a child.

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

You don't get paper bills. But you do have a online Sky account where you can view your billing?
And you also know how much they are taking each much via your bank statements-the DD would have risen when the Movie freebie ended after 6m.
If you didn't want the Movies, then why didn't you decline them when they were offered, and request some other sweetener?
However, if you've got a £100 credit for this and more, then I have to doff my virtual hat to you in admiration. Getting one over on Sky is a rare event, and you certainly had no contractual right to any compensation.

Would you care to explain what on earth you are on about?

Perhaps you could even translate it into English?

I don’t know what you’re using to fish with but I think when you reel in your line you’ll probably find you’ve hooked a rusty tin can.

Watch out for those two guys wearing dark glasses and hiding in the bush behind you. They might hit you with a rolled-up dictionary and abduct you to Guantanamo Bay.

Gap of 30 mins or so between OP saying 'what am I entitled to?' and then stating the compensation (compo) he 'got' ....
