Slowest BB in the country?

Reading Martin's lastest e mail release I thought I would run a test on the speed of my broad band.
My download speed is 0.24mbps!!
I do not live on a remote Hebredian island; but less than 6 miles from the centre of a large Midland city. BT is the only option as there is no cable in this village.
Apparently the national average BT download speed is 15.52mbps, so many people must be getting better than this. I am paying £14 a month for this appalling service.

Awful - thats a little less than mine was.
I live outside London, in a large commuter town with a huge industrial estate and I was averaging 0.3mbs (0.5 on a good day!).
Although I am lucky and now pay £20 a month for fibre getting 40mbs now. Having the fibre sorted after several years of living here has not increased basic speeds though!0 -

Enter your details here
Click on the BT ADSL button and post how far away it says your exchange is.
Is your BT Hub/router plugged into the master socket or an extension?
You would get better speeds than than on a Hebridean island! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I have an uncle who lives 4.2 miles from a city centre exchange, but was getting a maximum 0.12Mbps with BT. He pulled the plug after a month as they could not provide anywhere close to the 2Mb he was promised (not an up to promise, they claimed he would get at least 2Mbps).
That was four years ago and still no better on offer from BT or any of the other majors. So don't feel too bad about your 1/4 meg BB. At least it works!!0 -
i had better speed than that back in 98 :P0

Thats the trouble with living in Ambridge, all the available bandwidth is taken up by the live microphone feeds round the village.
What steps have your performed to investigate the appalling service?
The fault may be at your end. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
BT is your only line option. It's not your only ISP option though-there are dozens of resellers to choose from.No free lunch, and no free laptop

It might be worth checking your BT Master socket.
See this site for more info
If you are technically minded, you can open up the BT Master socket and check which wires are connected. If you have the Ring wire (or any other redundant wire) connected, this can seriously affect your broadband speeds.
Basically, all you need are wires 2 and 5 to be connected. If you have any other wires connected then gently disconnect them by pulling them out of their holder. No need to cut them."Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect." - Mark Twain0 -
