400+ hits on that page indicates that there are a lot of people looking for the part and have a similar problem ... by all accounts a design fault on this unit.

Possibly that could be your answer?

If the company your mechanic has sent the part off to is rushed off their feet, it could be that they're taking their time returning the working unit back.

Also: why is the Mazda variant of the same thing cheaper?

I would possibly accept it if the company were rushed off their feet - I find it harder to take knowing (as the garage has told me) that the well known international courier company lost my unit on the way to the repairer then delivered it to the wrong address!

... because as Vauxhall drivers we always get fleeced even for the same parts - if they could charge more for putting petrol in a Vauxhall they would (oh hang on, my MPG suggests they have that one covered ;)).

No you don't have any comeback with the garage, do you think they want your car blocking a space for so long? Try to get to the root of the problem and fix that. I'm guessing that the refurbed unit is lost and no-one wants to pay for the replacement, even secondhand, unit which will bump up the overall costs considerably. Incidentally this fault is found on most marques as the benefits of ordinary cars with abs get into their middle age.

I am sure that they didn't want it there for this long either. However, I am sorry, but you do have comeback on a garage if the timescale is unreasonable on a job as well as rights in relation to the quality of work and costs. See for example:

    http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/consumer_e/consumer_cars_and_other_vehicles_e/cars_garage_repairs_and_services_e/delays_in_carrying_out_work_garage_repairs.htm

or the new Motor Code for Service and Repair:
    http://www.motorcodes.co.uk/images/stories/documents/code_document_web.pdf

My question was what would be deemed appropriate compensation for loss of use (in addition to the hire car)? The root of the problem is I had a contract with the garage for this repair, they sent the part away and their supplier (or the suppliers supplier/courier) lost the part and have created an unreasonable delay. My contract is with the garage, theirs is with any subcontractor and they remain responsible (no one else in the supply chain would talk to me as they have no contract with me, Data Protection etc).

On MOT, a lot of Vauxhalls are going to be failing the MOT, the eml light is a feature on their cars.

They would if the EML light on was an MOT fail, but it isn't.

I was told that as a result of changes in MOT rules this year (as a result of EU interference!) any warning light on is an automatic MOT fail now. A quick Google suggests this is correct.

It's one of these things where lots of people on lots of motoring forums think it's an MOT fail, but if you speak to VOSA or anyone on any MOT specific forums they'll correctly advise it's not a fail.

When a lot of the MOT changes were proposed it included devices such as airbag warning lights, traction control lights and stability management . ABS lights on have always been a fail.
A lot of sites including the AA incorrectly advised that a warning light on the dashboard was an instant fail but the EML light isn't part of it.
