SAR request to Clydesdale bank - they are charging me more

Options
for copies of cheques.

I've done this on behalf of my mother and requested information on the payees details on 6 cheques (as my mother hasn't completed the stubs on her cheque books).

Clydesdale bank want to charge £5 per cheque to obtain a copy

Clydesdale bank advise me they may not have records between 2002 and 2004 (I've asked for copy bank statements for this period)

Are they trying it on?

No, they are not trying it in. They are allowed to charge for services that you want them to carry out.

  • OK, I presumed that with the SAR being submitted that this would cover information on cheques.

I didn't have any information about cheques I've written when I submitted SARs.

No. A SAR does not result in a copy of the cheques. It will be copy statements (that will not normally be as detailed as a consumer statement), any agreements or misc information held about you. Nothing on individual transactions

  • Thank you both, very helpful. One final query the bank says it may be difficult to get the statements between 2002 and 2004 as "this is more than 7 years ago". For specific reasons I need these years. Is there any way of finding out officially if they would still have these or not? I presumed they would be kept on microfiche or similar.

The SAR is the only way.
I presumed they would be kept on microfiche or similar.

Data protection required firms to destroy data that they no longer require after a suitable period. The FCA recommend 6 years for most things (some things longer).

There is little requirement for statements to be retained for more than 6 years in a relevant filing system. So, whilst some banks may hold on to them longer, a bank saying it may not hold them for that period is not unreasonable. The SAR will verify it or not. If they have them, you will get them.
