Do you use wipes to remove your make up? I always used to use them but then heard about them not being too good for your skin if used regularly. I find taking my eye make up off difficult as I wear black eyeliner and even wipes don't seem to get it off, nor do all in one cream cleansers, the oil based eye make up removers seem to work so far.
What about make up? I love Clinique but thats getting more expensive by the day so I am trying to stick to my second favourite, Boots No7.
I used to always use either make up remover wipes or baby wipes to take my make up off but was struggling keeping spots at bay even while using products with salicylic acid, then read about wipes being bad for your skin so stopped using them and now just wash my make up off when I ash my face and my skin had improved dramatically! I now only get the odd spot around the time of the month and don't get clusters of acne or fierce blackheads.
As for removing eye make up, when I'm washing my face, I just rub my eyes and it all washes off. Obviously I get the black marks all over our towels from dabbing dry but my eyelashes seem to be thicker too as I think all the rubbing from eye make up remover with cotton pads wasn't helping my lashes.0 -
I think Olay Regenerist is worth the money. I think its as good as far more expensive creams too.
I use sanctuary cleansing oil at night,(lasts forever) & a facewash in the morning with my clarisonic I think the clarisonic makes any facewash good.0 -
I used to love Liz Earle and still do (for presents but I cant afford to buy it myself). I wasi n tesco the other day and they have a hot cloth clenser and a 1/3rd off so it was £2.66 it came wiht a cloth and i love it nearly as much as Liz earle.
For hair I only use Paul Mitchell super strong shampoo and condition although it is pricey at £10 a bottle it makes my colour last much longer and long hair stay looking full and bright. I find shampoo and conditioner lasts about 2.5 months and that is washing every other day.0 -
You could also try conditioner only washing and coconut oil for conditioning your hair and as a body moisturiser. Or you could try other oils to moisturise.
I buy green clay and mix with water to make a face mask.
Unless I buy value brands this is cheap for me as I only need to buy things infrequently.0 -

I used to use LE in the morning (always use cleansing oil at night), I really like the Superdrug vitamin E face cleanser which is a LE lookalikee.
Its the best lookalikee ive found.0 -
Thanks for your replies. I think I've decided the way to go and thats not too expensive. Last night I was doing my sums and to buy the Clinique stuff would cost £30 more than the No7 stuff which I like almost as much. I've also swayed between different colours of foundation and samples and have decided to stick to the shade I have already, the lighter samples don't suit me, no matter what the No7 machine says and people say I look better with the shade foundation I have had for the past year.
I have relented and bought LE cleanse and polish and it is OK but only at first does it seem to give the glowing results, next day my skin doesn't seem to look much different. I may use this bottle up and just stick to No7 in the future.
Haircare though I will stick to the salon products as my hair has started thickening up since I've been using them and they do last for ages. But if I cut down on make up and skin care I can justify paying more for hair care.
So now I will use up what I have and then just stock up on the trusted items I know suit me and work. Thanks all0 -
Do you think that you can spend too much money on stuff that doesn't live up to the hype?
Yes. I don't buy anything of any value anymore without reading some reviews - what did we do before the internet??I use hair products from my hairdressers, she always recommends I use a treatment every time I wash my hair so thats what I've been doing. The most recent time I went I bought a new Clynol range which is supposed to keep your hair straight for days, it worked at first but now just makes my hair feel greasy and my scalp itchy.
I'm not a hairdresser, but isn't a treatment every time you wash your hair a conditioner? It seems slightly overkill to me unless you have very, very difficult hair. Shampoo that keeps your hair straight for days doesn't seem feasible to me.So I was in John Lewis tonight and saw the Liz Earle range of hair care. I like her Cleanser so asked the assistant about the hair care range. She said she used to be a hairdresser and she would never advise someone to use a treatment after every wash, she said how gentle the Liz Earle stuff is so I bought the shampoo for £8.00, said I'd try it and if it works I'll go back for the conditioner. Well I've used it tonight and it doesn't seem to be doing anything more than any other shampoo I've used, maybe I need to give it time?
You may need to give it more time. What are the issues with your hair? What are you looking for a shampoo to do? I just want my hair to feel clean when I've washed it, but not stripped of all moisture. As I said I like the Cleanse and Polish and I like the Liz Earle moisturiser but that is £20 so I am thinking of using the C&P cleanser but a cheaper moisturiser, would that work? I don't find the cleanser too expensive but the mosturiser is.
How much is the moisturiser? I think it depends on your skin and what your priorities are. If you break out a lot and you find that the Cleanse and Polish eliminates that then it may be worth it over a cheaper cleanser. If your skin is very sensitive or something and you're worried about aging, then investing in a good moisturiser may be worthwhile. Again I always read reviews before parting with any amount of money though.I really need to decide on a simple regime for both skin care and hair care and make up and stick to it and not get taken up with the hype. How do I do this?
My advice would be to decide what the most important issues are for your skin/hair etc and then research products that may help with them and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Gwen, thanks for this. My hair is very fine but damaged and my hairdresser said to use a treatment every time I wash it as a general conditioner on the ends and then use it as a full treatment about once a week. My hair has thickened up since doing this but I sometimes wonder if the treatment all the time is too much. I have a sensitive scalp. Someone has mentioned Herbal Essences which looks good but I think it would be too scented for me. I used to use Simple shampoo before I used the salon stuff.
The LE cleanser, I may need to carry on with it for a bit to see how it goes. I find the muslin cloth a bit faffy though and would rather use cotton wool with it, though the assistant said its much better with the cloth. I don't think its too expensive for a cleanser really as its only about four pounds more than No7 cleansers, though you do get the latter ones on offer a lot so they work out cheaper. The LE moisturiser is about £19.0 -

I assume you're the OP? As I said I'm not a hairdresser, but if your hair is fine and damaged, I'd be tempted to go for a gentle shampoo and a good conditioner with a treatment 2-3 times a week and lay off the heat treatment and colour if possible. Personally I try to use more 'natural' products where possible and find them very good for the most part. I think someone already suggested Naked, which I also like. I love Green People but it is a bit more expensive. I also like Happy Hair days which you can get in Sainsburys (do not use the Argan conditioner though - I used it twice last week and my hair still isn't right - can't get a brush through it) and DGJ Hair Juice from Waitrose. I've just bought Klorane Mango shampoo and conditioner which has very good reviews, but haven't used it yet.sixtiesgal wrote: »The LE cleanser, I may need to carry on with it for a bit to see how it goes. I think the muslin cloth is probably acting as an exfoliant and also helping to work the product into your pores, hence the assistants advice. Again, I'm no expert on beauty (bought enough of the stuff though), but that's what I'd imagine. If you can afford it and it's worth the money to you, then fair enough. I think it's about figuring out what you can afford and if you can't afford to splurge on every item in every area (and lets face it, who can?) prioritising where you spend your money.
For me, I'm also trying to come up with a simple but effective routine at the moment and it's taking shape like this:
Hair - Continue using gentle shampoos and good conditioners with more natural hair dye that is gentler on my hair. May test out diluting shampoo as I wash every day - see if my hair feels clean doing this. May be gentler and use less shampoo too. Can't face not washing hair every day though. Use up remaining hair products then look to find one that's more natural and doesn't create so much build up.
Skin - Main issues are blocked pores and concern about aging around the eye area, so I bought some Effaclar Duo (read lots of good reviews on clearing blocked pores) and I'm researching very good eye creams. Any nice natural-ish moisturiser will do and I may go back to oil cleansing to remove make up and gentle face wash for shower.
Makeup - Keeping it simple with Liz Earle tinted moisturiser, blusher, tinted lip balm. Looking to start tinting eyelashes regularly (to replace using mascara hopefully). Have been having HD brows done, currently investigating how to do at home.

PS. I really rate AModelRecommends blog and youtube videos for skincare recommendations.Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending0 -
I've had a look at the Superdrug hot cloth cleanser but it says not to use it on your eyes. I thought the whole point of these hot cloth cleansers was to remove all your make up and not have to use anything else for your eyes?
Dear Citygirl,
I also use the Superdrug Hot Cloth Cleanser - and didn't bother reading the instructions! I use it to remove all my make up - eyes included - just rub it all over and remove with a hot flannel. It removes everything, including my black eyeliner and mascara.
In my opinion, it really is as good as the others out there.
Sorry, I can't help with your hair issues. I use Tresemme - and only buy that when it's on offer.0
