Thomas cook flight

Hi all, I'm not used to posting on forums hope I am in the right place here goes...
On Friday 2nd August my flight was delayed with Thomas cook as the catering lorry crashed into the plane causing damage to the door seal, they did not have the necessary parts to repair the plane they had to be sourced from Luton hence the delay. We were told at 3 there was a technical problem, then at 6 that we would be flying at 9.30 exactly 8 hours late. The airline gave us letters to confirm the delay stating that we should claim from our insurance for the delay.
I'd like to know if anyone has experienced anything similar and wether from experience anyone thinks that this may be put down to a exceptional circumstance, any thoughts would be appreciated
