We have just had a piece with letter box built and as yet we do no have a doorbell on the outside, this won't be done for a month or so as will be wired in.
We are keeping the porch locked due to a small but very enthusiastic foster dog who could potentiality nip or scratch any postie or paper boys fingers.
We assumed that post could be left using the letterbox in the porch.
The postman delivered a letter today which would easily fit in the porch letterbox which is larger than normal.
The postman became very angry with us. He was quite nasty and said we shouldn't lock our porch and we must have a working doorbell for him to deliver post.
I'm really quite worried about this as I don't want to risk foster dog nipping anyone - we are working on this but it's not a quick fix.
I also don't understand why we should have to leave the porch unlocked.
Does anyone know if it's true that we should leave the porch unlocked?
We are happy to collect large items from the sorting office anyway when cards are left.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you leave the porch unlocked, id postie going to cover any thefts from the porch?
It might be convenient for him, however he'd be (rightly) complaining if he got nipped by the dog.
At previous address (no porch here) we never left the porch unlocked, and incidentally never fit doorbells (and never had complaints from posties or couriers). Two colleagues with porches have never been asked to leave them unlocked either.

Well we have never had a door bell and we have never left out porch unlocked for the postman, just as we would never leave the front door unlocked for their convenience, if he isn't capable of using a letter box or knocking on a door he needs to find another job.0

He's talking nonsense. You're the customer here and he'd be first to complain in dog bit him!
Is he a regular postman or just covering your area?
Strangely enough, we have a bell (one with a string to pull) but the postman never uses it, either knocks on the door or rattles the letterbox.0 -
if you wanted to be really mean you could find the numbe of your local post office, call & ask for clarification on the information your post man provided i.e how you should leave porch unlocked & whatever else. express concern that he seemed to be angry over your attempts to keep dogs from getting out but that if the post office can send a letter stating that any bites the postie will get you aren't liable for & that any loss of letters, parcels etc will be fully covered by post office you are more than happy to comply with him.
Seriously though, of course you can lock your posrch, your house, you decide. Your postie sounds like a nasty person. I would ignore & carry on as normal.I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

Hardly anyone in our street has a door bell and I've never even heard of a postman 'needing' to use one. Why not just knock? :SOctober Grocery Challenge: £20.65/£150

He is talking completely out of his bum.
We haven't got a bell, no porch and only a letter box outside. And this is permanent solution.
Seems he is going through man-opause and was just having a hot flush and taking it out on you.
Or has been bitten by a dog before - one with rabies.
I would call the PO as Quidsy says.0 -
If you have a secure delivery point, the address is permanently occupied and there is no danger to Health & Safety the Postman has no reason to deny you your mail or harangue you about your porch.
Either he was having a bad day, always treat a one-off as a one-off, or he has an attitude problem, in which case if he persists in the same attitude write a letter of complaint with a request for a reply within 7 days. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

no doubt because its harder to hear from a porch
anyway.
sounds more like he is used to leaving packets inside the porch,so by being lockd he will have to leave a card
if you have a letterbox then its fine
just realise you will have to collect the items in this scenarioif you wanted to be really mean you could find the numbe of your local post office, call & ask for clarification on the information your post man provided i.e how you should leave porch unlocked & whatever else. express concern that he seemed to be angry over your attempts to keep dogs from getting out but that if the post office can send a letter stating that any bites the postie will get you aren't liable for & that any loss of letters, parcels etc will be fully covered by post office you are more than happy to comply with him.

If I were to be really mean
I would point out you should be aware of the difference between Royal Mail & Post Office Counters, before giving advice on what to do0 -

Good lord what is wrong with people on this forum, I used the wrong name. Get over it.
And in case you missed in it in your sense of humour bypass my next sentance said "Seriously though" clearly implying my previous paragraph was a joke.
