when i got married 16 yrs ago me and my x set up a joint account, i only used the account for about 4 yrs as prefered my own bank account but never had my name removed and had forgotten it was even on it, eventually the bank stopped issuing me with a debit card as i never used it, anyway last year i got a divorce and when i wanted to buy him out of the house i was refused credit, i couldnt understand why as i had always paid everything on time so i did an equifax report on line, sure enough, it showed lots of credit on there and i had always paid them but it had the joint account which has default on it, it had defaulted 2011 but apparently all been paid off. i wrote to the bank to have it removed as i had never used the account in yrs or been issued a card in yrs but they told me they had no record of the account as it had been closed and they had updated to a new system, i now dont know what to do, i have never been in debt in my life and i am refused credit can anyone help in giving me ideas on anything i could do to get out of this mess:mad:

If they are unable to substantiate the data that is on your credit file there could be cause to request it is expunged.
Pen a letter outlining this.
Advise them that they should either substantiate the data, sending you copies of statements proving the account fell into default and prove they complied with their obligations to issue you with a default notice.
Advise that if they are unable to substantiate this that the data is invalid, unsubstantiable and must be expunged from your credit files immediately.
Close by advising that should they fail to comply you will escalate your request to the ICO and FOS.
Good luck!

As far as I'm aware you had a joint account and because you didn't remove yourself from the account and your ex defaulted on the account, both your credit ratings will show the default.
If it defaulted in 2011 and you left him last year, what does your ex have to say about it?
Good luck trying to get it removed, if the account did default and they did everything by the book, the default will remain for 6 years from that date as it will be a factual description of the account.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards.
