    The poor sods!!!!!

I agree. No-one on here would want to be forced to give a chunk of their deceased parent's possessions to the state. Obviously there will be plenty of envious class-warriors who are happy to see anyone richer than them suffer though.

Maybe not, but that's VERY different to what you proposed, which was that people hope their inheritance will be as big as possible when their parents pop it.

It's a terribly sad way to think of things, hence why I don't know anyone that thinks that way. (or didn't, should I say). Most want their parents to enjoy their life while they have it.

That might be one for the desperation index.

I'll repeat the point. No-one receives an inheritance and is disappointed that it's too big.

I'd agree that all people want their parents to have a long and happy life. If you're implying I'm saying the opposite then you've achieved a new, pathetic low.

Being on the receiving end of an estate that is subject to IHT is hardly suffering.

If someone doesn't want their heirs to suffer in this way it's a doddle to avoid IHT.
  • Imagine inheriting £1,000,000. Now imagine the horror of only being allowed to keep £730,000 of it. The poor !!!!!!s! Id probably shoot myself in the face with a shotgun if this happened to me!

If you bring the bag of money with you could do it at my place if you want. It'll save your carpets for sure.

    Excellent news.

An ordinary young couple in their 20's, teacher and bank teller, buying a 3 bed house with a 5% deposit thanks to HTB.

    Massively good news.

The bad news that it is considered to be news. Were it the norm rather than news, it would mean that supply and demand have magically returned to 1960s levels.

I missed that news item though, and would love to believe it was somwhere in the UK South of Coventry and without a major cash injection from Bank of Mum and Dad.

TBH until you've given away £270K of your own money your opinion on the subject isn't worth much. Anyone can say how easy it would be for someone ELSE to give up a chunk of their wealth.

Pure Greed. We're talking about a situation where a person inherits £730k. That money wasn't earnt by them. They're not deserving of the money just simply lucky to be born to wealthy parents. £325k tax free as well poor souls!

I've paid well over 270k in income tax so far (in my life) and I can honestly say that I wish that I had paid well over 100 times that.

That sounds like pure hypocrisy. If it's not, why don't you voluntarily give up 25% of your wealth to the treasury?

I'm sure you don't want to. Why do you think "rich" people should feel any different.

In my experience poor people are every bit as greedy as rich people. Have you ever met anyone who wants to move to a worse area? No you haven't, because no-one does, because everyone is greedy. In fact it's a perfectly natural state, you're designed to be that way.

Unfortunately lots of people who are poor are insanely jealous of anyone rich therefore they like to ascribe faux morality to themselves & simultaneously delight in anything that happens to the rich "b******s".

Personally although IHT isn't something that affects me (unless one of my almost universally skint relatives wins the lottery) I think it's a disgusting tax. The rest of the country can queue up to grasp a chunk of someone's bought & paid for possessions the second they pop it if that's the limit of their ambition. I'd rather endeavour to earn enough to pay for whatever I want myself.
