  • How long is a piece of string?

Do you mean immigration & customs as getting through the customs check should only take a couple of minutes but immigration can take 5 minutes or an hour.

Before anyone can give any idea of the time it will take, you need to state what airport, what time and date you will be arriving and will everyone travelling with you have an EU passport.
All of these things can make a big difference as to the time it will take.

Also how many other planes have just landed and how many people need to get through the same lane as you.

No one can seriously answer that. OK people can answer it but it will be total quess work.

But to keep the conversation going - NO.
  • I'd allow at least a couple of hours if non-flexible train times are involved - but then again I'd be thinking about more than just getting through customs and immigration, because whether the plane will land on time is just as variable.

In fact, I'd not take the risk, and I'd either allow something like 6 hours leeway or I'd book flexible train tickets.

so you fly out and back in to Manchester? Surely best to get a flexible rail ticket as so many things could delay you along the way.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Off peak return? You at least get a degree of flexibility, then. What time and what day of the week do you land?

Last December we flew back from LA to Manchester via Heathrow - Virgin LA to Heathrow and then BA from Heathrow to Manchester. Our bags were checked through so we didn't need to collect them and re-check them in again at Heathrow. The Heathrow to Manchester flight is domestic so from collecting our bags to exiting the airport took all of 5 minutes and the train station is only a short walk.

    Enjoy your trip.

it really will depend on what sort of savings you are looking at as an unexpected delay could wipe it all out (and then some). As others have said there are factors that can't necessarily be considered in advance...especially how many other planes are shortly in front of you - arrive right after a few big planes land and you'll have a much longer queue than if you happened to be on the first plane of the bunch in.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
