    If I didn't know better, I'd think you were a turn-of-the-century banker!

To which century would you be referring?

If house prices are booming why are people still in negative equity?

Perhaps they live in Northern Ireland.
Perhaps they took 100% mortgage IO, and have repaid no capital.
Perhaps they lied on their forms and got a 125% mortgage.
    Perhaps they got into arrears.
Perhaps they have neglected the house or performed amateur so-called "home improvements" that were nothing of the sort.
Perhaps their house has been blighted by wind farms, a new by-pass, or a pig farm.

Or any combination of the above.

Perhaps they're just victims of the turn-of-the-century banking scam.

so house prices that a lot of people can't afford are going to get even more unaffordable. HAVE WE LEARNT NOTHING?, how long before we get the 125% mortgages , face palm

people make their own choices in life. There are plenty of places around the country that people can afford, but choose not to. If you want to live in the more desirable areas and take on massive debt, good look to you, expect to pay a premium. If you want to own, then move to somewhere you can afford, simple. Plenty of houses in the uk that the average salary can afford.

can you get an average salary in those areas, doing a job that you want to do or are qualified for ? .
most people work near where they live or have good transport links , it's no point someone working in london moving to grimsby just because the houses are cheap .
all the houses built in my local area have been on the whole , large 4-5 bed houses going for £500k +, that is no good if you're working on the till at a supermarket

Why should the average salary be able to buy a house?

Do you understand how the average salary is calculated?

Presumably that's because of the way the planning laws are applied by your local council, prevent lower value houses being built.

take somebody in london who has a 60k deposit, they can go and buy out right somewhere else. And it depends what you call averege, uk average 27k ish yes. And as a couple you could have 50k easily. So take your outright house and 50k take home, save up then move back to london. Its a lifestyle choice. If your over 40 then thats a different story, its your own fault you cant own for being a mong 20 years ago.

They can, but they would presumably have to give up their job to do so.

Which doesn't seem a particularly bright thing to do.

In no place in the article does it say that the 'Government welcomes sharp increases in house prices'.

You have just made it up.
Anyone see any quotes from the Government that "welcomes sharp increases in house prices".

No I didn't think so, yet more trolling by our resident muddler.
