I've just had an offer accepted on my new property which i'm well psyched about. Our rent is paid tomorrow, and we will be wanting that to be our last month, so moving out on the 14th September.
Just wondering what i should put in the letter to the letting agents.
Simply state that we're moving out?
Also, we had a problem with the bath that the (unprofessional) 'plumber' that the letting agent sent came to fix. He took the bath panel as well as some other pannelling off which meant the finish on some of the wood is now not 100%. The letting agent already knows about this and said it was fine, but should i mention it in my letter just to cover myself?

Offer accepted, but when will you exchange? Don't give notice until you've done that or you risk not having a home (unless you can crash elsewhere for a period of time?)0

there are no circumstances where you can ever give one months calendar notice, your notice must be timed in relation to your tenancy period, this may not align with your rent payment dates
I assume you are no longer in a fixed period tenancy and have now "gone periodic"?
if you send notice tomorrow 14th then technically speaking, it is not formally served until 2 days later (the courts allow 2 days for 1st class post to be sent and delivered, they do not (yet) consider e mail an acceptable form of notice) so it would not techncially be served until 15th in which case, assuming your tenancy period runs 14th - 13th, you have missed the September cutoff and so the notice would expire on 13th October and you would be liable for rent until 13 Oct0 -
It maybe 6 months before you get the keys to the new property so for now say nothing to the Landlord or Letting Agents as this may make the LL/LA want to show new tenants around while you still live there!!!!!
So for now just follow the lead from your Solicitor and if you end up renting the property for a week or two after you own your new home it gives you time to clean/paint the new place
Good Luck0 -
I bought outright in cash, completion is scheduled for 26th August.Offer accepted, but when will you exchange? Don't give notice until you've done that or you risk not having a home (unless you can crash elsewhere for a period of time?)
Correct, we're on a one month 'rolling' contract. Letting's agent is on the main road next to our flat, takes 30 seconds to leave my flat and hand the letter to him in person.there are no circumstances where you can ever give one months calendar notice, your notice must be timed in relation to your tenancy period, this may not align with your rent payment dates

We're in Scotland, if that makes a difference (they're legally bound to complete on the date we stated in our offer which has been accepted.) Home was bought outright, no lender or mortgage, completion date (ie, date we get the keys and give them the money) is scheduled for 26th August. It maybe 6 months before you get the keys to the new property so for now say nothing to the Landlord or Letting Agents as this may make the LL/LA want to show new tenants around while you still live there!!!!!

I appreciate the replies but they're mostly to questions that i didn't ask.

That's great you got it after the closing date

The OP is in Scotland so once missives are concluded, entry should be soon. I'd ask your solicitor if working towards an entry date of 14 September is realistic and then just tell the letting agents you're giving your notice.

Then give your notice in writing and if possible have a witness!
Clean the rental property and take lots of photos, read the meters and inform EVERYONE you are moving
Enjoy your new home0 -

I'm presuming as it's an empty repo i'll just be given the keys pretty soon after the 26th, either way i ain't paying for any longer in this dump! Notice is being given today! It's a nice looking little flat despite the problems we've had and it'll get let out instantly i think.

would have helped if you had stated you are in Scotland then,I appreciate the replies but they're mostly to questions that i didn't ask.
you can give notice anytime so your letter simply says the date you are moving out in one months time, nothing more needs saying. Get a witness if delivering by hand0 -

Brilliant to be able to decorate if need be while still staying in your present flat.
Shelter's got loads of other good information about your move, ie
