Driving Experience

Hi.

I've been looking at some driving jobs (car/small van only) and applied for a couple and been rejected. I've been driving a few years and have a full clean licence, but got no work experience in driving which I assume would be the main reason why.

How can I get work experience in driving?

Check out your local taxi/private hire operators to see if they need more drivers. One of the few driving jobs that most people can walk straight into. It will convince you if you want to drive for a living!

A lot of charity shops need stuff moved and seem to look for drivers so you could perhaps build up some experience with some of them.

Don't you need some sort of specific licence to do that? I didn't think it was something anyone could just do.

They usually want someone who owns a van, which I don't. Plus I wouldn't be any good with moving anything heavy if it were a charity shop that has any furniture. Can't say I've ever seen a sign that doesn't say "man with van" or "got a van?" or something along them lines.

Might have another look to see though.

OP I work part time as an auction driver, I drive anything from a van to cars. It's normally agency work but if there is an auction anywhere near you then you could always ring up and ask.

Tried and was rejected instantly. But they had many unrelated questions based on other jobs within the company that I didn't know how to reply to so I'm guessing that's probably why :(

To be a taxi driver you need to have a medical plus a licence allowing you to drive for hire, most local authorities control this so OP would need to enquire there, not a job you can walk into right away, plus many are self employed.

OP how old are you? if under 25 then it's the insurance which may see you being rejected for these kind of jobs.

    I don't mind being self-employed.

I think as just a self-employed taxi driver not working for any other company you do need a special licence and that, but having looked on the .gov site I think you just need to do a test if you're working for a company. Still not a job you can exactly just walk into though.
