Male dog feminisation syndrome?

A dog in our family was castrated about 6 weeks ago - he's 19 months old.
He visited yesterday and it was a nightmare. My own entire male dog, who plays fine with him normally, took one sniff of him and went crazy.
He was trying to mount him (which the other dog just thought was a new game) and actually...er...well, shall we say needed an extensive clean up of his fur afterwards...!!!:eek:
Had a bit of a google and it seems castration in a youngish dog can cause feminisation syndrome, so that the dog smells like a female in season:eek:
The vet never mentioned this possible side effect pre-castration.
Has anyone heard of it or had experience of it?

Has it calmed down at all since it first started happening? Is there any treatment the vet can give for it, do you know?0 -

it stopped when he reached about 8 years of age, just put it down to male dogs thinking he was female:cool:,now he growls if they go to hump him,and normally they back off.
That's what I saw when I googled it. That the dog may become fear aggressive with the male dogs who mount him.
Surely the vet should have mentioned this possibility?0 -
A dog I had a few years ago went through this when he first got castrated but it did settle down after a few months. I think it does take a while for their hormones to get themselves sorted after the op.0

Thanks Katy. Hope you're right! It's stressful having to separate them all the time - not that there's any fighting as the other dog is quite happy to play this new "game" but my own dog has become obsessed with trying to mount him when previously they just had a bit of a play bouncing round in the garden together.
And there's the worry that he will be besieged by other dogs in the park on walks which has the potential to turn nasty.0 -
I've seen plenty of both entire dogs and neutered dogs (and females) try and hump each other. I don't think you could call an entire male feminised at all. So it might just be a behavioural thing on the part of the humper, not the other dog's doing at all.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0

Thanks jojo. But this is far from normal doggie humping. And it's NOT my entire male I'm referring to as feminised, it's the dog who's been castrated.
Normally my dog just plays with the other dog with a bit of rough and tumble, but when the dog visited on Sunday my dog instantly ran over to him and mounted him.
My dog wouldn't leave him alone but kept humping away to the point of....er...fulfillment......several times!!!
He's NEVER done that before. Even my female dog was sniffing the visiting dog intently. They usually all just play together.
My dog was crazed by whatever scent the castrated dog was giving off, and a bit of googling did suggest that after the op, a male dog can smell like a female in season.0 -
You can get a spray that masks the smell of a female dog on heat, would it be worth trying it? You can get it from PaH, and presumably on line, it's called b I t c h spray. That's a lower case i, BTW.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0 -

Thanks Mrs Atobe. I will give that a try, see if it helps. The grandkids are here when the visiting dog is, and it's not really something I'm happy for them to be seeing.0
