If you have too many open (especially websites with adverts busily flashing away) it can use CPU.
How many tabs do you have open?
Quite a few but it never used to be a problem.0 -

I dont see why it would use more RAM. It's currently using 3100MB RAM just with Firefox open. Used to use well under 2000MB all the time. I have 4MB RAM in total.0 -
It gets to the point, using Yahoo, Facebook, or having Skype, that they just hog the computer.
Yahoo just loads the page with ads etc, Facebook datamines, there is a new game on there apparently, that when you play it, it uses your computer power to gain info on tree disease? Skype uses your computer as a data hub, to connect to other users, as to speed up their service? The opposite of what the internet should be? Cheap servers for them, let the users act as servers?0 -

If everything was a dedicated server/client relationship the internet would be a vastly more expensive, less useful place.0 -
Distributed computing is a fantastic way of making use of valuable resources that lie idle 90+% of the time. Massively parallel computing and the rapid torrenting of very large files are two of the best things to come out of the internet, and are EXACTLY what it's about - a network of people mutually assisting one another by pooling their resources.
If everything was a dedicated server/client relationship the internet would be a vastly more expensive, less useful place.
But when running my computer, it lags, I can't use it, I need to upgrade it always, due to snide programs like FB and Skype? Who are silent partners in these? The manufacturers of computers and components. Therefore; we bog your computer down; then you will buy from us.
It might be OK in a classroom, when computers not used between lessons, left on all day; but not an ideal to force people to upgrade to spend to the people that cause this.
When I use my computer; I use it 100%, so where your stats come from? But as always, stats are manipulated to suit the end user.0 -
If you don't want to be involved in distributed computing - just don't go on the site/game/whatever... they aren't sneakily using your PC for nefarious purposes without your knowledge. Facebook and Skype aren't "hacking" your PC and bogging it down.0

That comment has got to be the most daft comment I have ever read!
Don't use the Internet at all, because all sites do it?
Google and co. are not sneakily using my PC for nefarious practices? Do you read the news? They do it daily.
Skype and FB, use remote computers as hubs. ie mine and yours.
I am completely astonished and amazed regarding your complete ignorance, and lack of knowledge, I don't understand why you posted. You are the reason why I don't drive so much anymore. With people like this on the planet, we are doomed.:eek:0 -
god this thread has gone off topic a bit.
anyway spaceboy no one has mentioned malware at all, i suggest download malwarebytes then update definitions then run full scan see what that kicks out to start with.

next
also suggest getting ccleaner and get rid of rubbish hidden away on systems that will also slow things down as well.
http://downloads.cnet.co.uk/view/utilities/ccleaner-39186386/
next
download and run wise registry cleaner to clean rubbish out and tidy registry up then after that make sure you run the registry defrag to compact it up that will speed it all up as well.

next
you say you got issues with firefox i suggest you manually download it but do not install it until you completely unistall old version and run the registry cleaner again to make sure is all wiped away then reinstall from the fresh download so is completely starting new, just make sure any important bookmarks are written down on a bit of paper first.

next
i properly stating obvious here but take it you have also updated your anti-virus and run a full scan if not make sure you do.
next
also regards hoovering out the heat sink good idea to do case and case fan etc etc.
finally
run hard disk defragger leave to run will take a while but will help the hard drive.
i suggest defraggler http://www.filehippo.com/download_defraggler
hope this helps
