I'm not sure - I updated to a newer version when I restarted. Now version 23.0

    It may have been 22.0

1)where does she have the PC tower?
2)does she have enough room around the tower to allow air to circulate and not having the fan grill covered?
Strange if shes fried 3 HDD, possible a fan/heatsink issue if point 2 above is OK, so may need to be checked

She had killed the hdisks over a time, not all at once!

I'm a computer engineer; but the Windows CD, repair option of chkdsk /r DID work. It just started back up.

    Thanks for the info.

Why would a fan or cooling issue start using loads of RAM and processor power?

I have a bad habit in FF of leaving lots of tabs open, and I have it set to reopen them when I next open FF. There are tabs that I've left there for weeks that I keep meaning to get back to.:o

If you have too many open (especially websites with adverts busily flashing away) it can use CPU.

How many tabs do you have open?
