Does cancer = automatic entitlement to pip?

  • There should be a Benefit Advisor connected to the local MacMillan centre who should be able to help you.

nobody can say for sure if someone is going to live for more or less than 6 months, however, if due to the grade and stage of your cancer there is a possibility of dieing within 6 months you would be able to claim under the special rules.

Hopefully you will not be able to claim under special rules, so it would be down to what care needs you have which can be psycological as well as physical.

I have cancer which can't be removed, but has shrunk after chemo and radiotherapy. I will be having more chemo at some point in the future, but at the moment, the cancer is stable, so I'm not having any treatment for now.

My husband has been seeing a counsellor and mentioned to her that I haven't claimed dla/pip as I'm not sure that I would get it. She told him that as I have cancer, I'd be automatically entitled to it.

Can anybody shed some light on this as I've never seen it mentioned and wondered if she was getting it mixed up with the special rules for terminal illness.

I'm not claiming any other benefits as I was a housewife before I was diagnosed.

It would be handy if I could claim it as my daughter has come to care for me, giving up her job, and she can't claim on her insurance or claim carers allowance unless I'm receiving dla/pip.

    TIA

Have you applied for ESA? The special rules include treatment for Chemo and radiotherapy treatment both current and on going. Have a read - 2nd paragraph under terminal one: http://pseudo-living.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/esa-descriptors-and-points.html

No, I haven't applied for ESA because my job was "housewife". I haven't suffered any loss of earnings since being diagnosed.

I'll only be applying for pip, in the hopes that I get it, so that my daughter can then claim on her insurance and claim carers allowance.

She's given up her job to move here and taken over my role, doing all the housework and cooking. Although she's applied for loads of jobs, she hasn't even had an interview yet, so her and her fiance are living on his part time wage.

Really annoyed that her dad (my ex) sold her this insurance (he's a financial adviser) in case she lost her job and now she can't claim it because the clause for giving up work to care for someone states that the person she's caring for must be receiving DLA.

    Sorry!!

You know exactly what I mean. If the DWP offer an incentive or special dispensation to one particular group of people you can guarantee that there will be those that will try and 'squeeze' their claim in on the basis of some tenuous link!!

like you have squeezed every little penny you can on all your claims, do give it a rest Andy especially to people who really are ill.
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

    .

I have come across this before with a 'Parkinson' sufferer who attempted to claim ESA.

I found this from their website that explains what ESA is.

What do we mean by working age income replacement benefits

There are a number of different benefits available to support people of working age with Parkinson's.
The 2 main working age income replacement benefits are Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Incapacity Benefit.
ESA is a benefit paid if your ability to work is limited by ill health or disability. Its assessment phase normally involves undergoing a test of readiness for work.
In the long term there is an aim to move all existing claimants of Incapacity Benefit over to ESA.

I am 42 and was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. I have worked full time since the age of 18.......and quite honestly some people on here want to try to live with being diagnosed with cancer, the cost of all the extra stuff you end up buying because of treatment and its side effects (i.e.....covers to put over a PICC line so that you can shower etc etc etc.....all costs that no one who hasn't been diagnosed would give a thought to).....and all this at a time when your income goes and you find yourself on ESA. Do I feel ashamed that I now have to claim "benefits".....no I bloomin well don't. After bills it gives be approx. £10 per week to buy food and toiletries.....try that one when you are being told to try to eat as healthy as possible!!!!

Much of what you've read and object to in this thread was written by the now banned [again] Andy&Flo. Threads that are gerrymandered by trolls by definition do not reflect this groups real feedback & feelings. Many and indeed most of the posters here are generally good people whose intention is to help educate and support others. A trolled thread however oftentimes deliberately sets out to hurt and misinform, something to take into consideration when reading and responding to inactive threads.

Best of luck and take care nell36 !

Where does the DWP draw the line? What illness/disabilities should qualify?

You know and I know that if the DWP give a foot, people will try and make it into a yard!

self indulgent illness, like drug and drink abuse,

Hi understand exactly what you are going through, my wife was diagnosed in March, and is undergoing chemo. She has had many problems ,infection from her line, the need for blood transfusions for low HB count, and the side effects both from the treatment and medication are terrible to see.She had her own business ,a shop that she ran on her own and was doing well. Unfortunately she has now had to close the business down, due to this cancer and her treatment. Her consultant and oncologist say that once her chemo and radiotherapy finish, it could be another 12 months before she is truly fit for work. She sent her ESA50 in 3 months ago ,and has heard nothing from them. A phone call just to ask ATOS for some info ,resulted in them being rude and nasty , upsetting my wife to tears. Heartless scrotes. From a thriving small business to nothing, shes lost everything that she has built up over the past 11 yrs. they make it difficult, and make you feel guilty for claiming the pittance you are entitled to.
