The 1.6 16 valve engine is an interference engine, so valve to piston contact is most likely. You may be lucky, but you need to put a belt on to find out.

had one go on the 2.0 IDE engine - clearance is so big on these, nothing more than a new belt required.
Working, the car is worth around £1500 - £2k at a dealers, £1000 PX. but for the price of swapping out the engine, just for the fun factor of having a spare ragtop to play with, I would go that route if a simple replace belt does not work.

Unfortunately can't keep her even if we do get her running. I brought a lovely mk2 Megane cabriolet with 40k on the clock as a replacement :). Hubby's going to try to replace belt this week and if it doesn't go will have to scrap her.

Was going through my old posts and though I would update...
Hubby changed the belt on my old Megane but unfortunately too much damaged had been done to the engine, So we sold her for spares in the end :(

New Megane is going strong though, If I get 6 years trouble free motoring like the last one I will be happy :j
  • Put a timing belt on this one and a water pump if driven by it as a precaution.:D

ice_babe, thanks for coming back and telling us how it turned out in the end. Not enough people bother to do this.

Dont delay on that.. Just because its got a low mileage doesnt mean the belt is not worn or deteriorating.

Rubber perishes just as quickly with lack of use. Low mileage with lots of cold starts then get it done sooner rather than later.
