Is my car worth Fixing?
Last week my beloved megane cabriolet which I have owned touble free for 6 years broke her cambelt
The car is a 1999 V reg Mk1 Facelift Megane Sport Alize 1.6 16v cabriolet.
14 Years old but is in amazing condition for her age, only covered 62k miles. Just passed her MOT with no advisories. In bright green metallic paint, Full leather, alloys, power hood air con ect, you get the picture
I have replaced the car as need one for work/summer holidays ect (newer megane cabriolet), but am currently undecided with what to do with the old one as would like to recoupe as much money from her as possible. It seams such a shame to brake/scrap the car but its looking like a big job to repair engine. We are strugling to find diagrams on timing the belt ect, I brought the Haynes book on a normal megane (Hayes don't do a book for the cabriolet) But the engine is different to mine.

You probably want be able to see how much damage was done until you strip it down, if you're lucky it could just need a new cambelt, but if you're unlucky it could have mega engine damage.
Don't you know anyone that could have a quick look/Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

What are the chances off none of the valves being bent? It didn't go bang when it broke down, just died.
Hubby was going to fit new cam belt and turn it by hand to see if there was compression, However can't find any diagrams anywhere!0 -
The lower your speed the better your chances. I've had a belt go but when i was only going 5mph and i was lucky.
Sounds promising i think that there was no bang.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

doing around 50-60mph and managed to roll it, into a layby.0

Have a read of this, someone else had the same problem and found it cheaper to get a 'scrap' engine.

take cam cover off and inspect for broken rockers, remove cams and test compression.
if all good then get cam belt kit & reassemble, if not then price up new valves/gaskets/maybe guides vs scrap engine/head0 -
Renault petrol engines of that era do not have the valve clearance. Sorry, but best to scrap or sell to mechanic0

take your pick0 -
had one go on the 2.0 IDE engine - clearance is so big on these, nothing more than a new belt required.
Working, the car is worth around £1500 - £2k at a dealers, £1000 PX. but for the price of swapping out the engine, just for the fun factor of having a spare ragtop to play with, I would go that route if a simple replace belt does not work.0
