There will always be someone having problems with broadband. Many of the problems are due to problems with internal extension wiring which is why you were being asked to do some fairly simple tests to check that.

yes simple checks so they know to send out the correct engineer if they need too.

not pulling the boxes to pieces, just undo 2 screws and under the plate you will see what looks like a telephone socket, just plug the router into that to test, if this works then its a fault from master socket to extension socket, if this does not work then its a fault on the line so they can then carry out a line test.

Don't think of it as Sky not wanting to help you, think of it more as Sky saving you £129. If they send a BT engineer to your house to check the line, and the fault is with the equipment as you suspect, Openreach will charge at least £129 for the engineer visit. Checking if you have a test socket and if you still have the issue with it plugged in, means they can then send out a new router to try to solve the issue (although most companies will get you to try a different router on the line, Sky are annoying when it comes to not using their kit).
If you have the same issues with TalkTalk (the fibre is only to the cabinet, it's still the same wire to your house) they will ask you to "take all my sockets to bits" as well.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

so you have plugged the router into master socket and it is now working. If this is the case then the issue is with the extension

WRONG. if it is still not working at the test socket then the issue is with the line from the exchange to the house and nothing to do with the router, so they would need to do a line test , so they can try and find where the fault is.

    That's right... you did.

But that isn't the whole story is it?
As I tried to explain, it could equally be a faulty router.
Just discounting the house internal wiring does not mean the router is Ok.

Your fault finding diagnosis is sub-standard.

Did I call you a liar?

All I'm doing is pointing out your mistake.

If you cannot take comments that do not agree with your point of view, then I respectfully suggest that perhaps internet forums are not for you.

It would also be wrong of me not to attempt to correct your opinion, simply because others later may come to rely on something which is not quite correct.

but if its not working from the master socket then first thing Sky or any provider would do is run an external line test to rule that out as no good sending a new router until they rule out a line fault. thats why they want testing from the master socket ( no idea what those with old master sockets do as they dont have test socket)

I know how sky can be and how they have their hands tied with BT openreach. read my thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=62768956&postcount=1
even though they did find a line fault and fixed this along with BB, still just had to email them again as connedtion has been dropping a few times today.
