Supermarket cat food recommendation please

  • Which is cheaper Animonda or Smilla?
It's really annoying me tbh: I've already ordered more expensive litter due to smells that I don't want hitting me as fast (closing windows to keep heat in) from zooplus today. Was using 50/50 wood chip & fullers earth (all supermarkets have dropped their prices for both).
whilst there is the option to feed more raw this entails extra work in cleaning - tomcat drags it across kitchen floor (to cut down on expenditure).

Feed mine botiza as well but she likes a change fussy madam. I got given a dozen of them to dry by someone in my area whose cat wouldn't eat them. She loved the Chicken in Jelly Botiza Tetra Pack and so we order 24 or something and now she won't touch them as she probs sick to death of them.

Tend to feed butchers classics as people said as high meat content compared to likes of whiskers etc. Also fed Feline Fayre which is pretty cheap and avaliable at Asda (not sure about other supermarkets) and even cheaper at Home Bargains. Mines likes the simply range from Feline Fayre especially chicken.
If your in tescos they sell a range called Encore its a bit pricey so we just feed it as a treat now and again. Its very similar to Applaws like basically identical.

For dry feeding Harringtons at the moment as on a budget and high protein (such as applaws dry) gave her upset stomach. I know it contains cereals but my cat doesn't suffer from food allergies. I have fed vets kitchen which is pretty good but a little bit expensive for the size. Harringtons is around same price as whiskers/supermarkets own anyway. Think I paid £4 for 3kg and there is a whole debate about where cats should even be fed dry due to kidney issues etc (won't get in to) so I just leave a small amount down daily for her graze on when she pops in and out of the house. So 3kg will last a good few months.
  • another vote for butchers, high life is also pretty good, but gives both my 2 the runs. have heard that sainsburys own meat is pretty good compared to most other supermarket stuff

encore is the same as aplaws but as you prob know the meat isn't a complete food.

have you considered giving them a few raw meals? chicken wings. chunks of meat etc, providing its only 20% of their weekly food you don't need to worry about balances, great for their teeth as well
    Lead us not into temptation...

just tell us where it is and we'll find it....
  • Tried my two on Bozita and they ate one lot of each of the flavours then wouldn't touch it after that. The only wet food I have found that Gizmo eats and doesn't go off after the first pouch is Sheba Select Menus poultry selection. I have come to the conclusion that it could be because it is flakes rather than chunks but am yet to find another meat that comes in flakes (any suggestions?).

Salem eats a predominantly dry diet (he'll have a little of Gizmo's meat and will ocassionally try a bit of ham or chicken roll), he's never been bothered by any form of meat since a young age. At the moment he is finishing off the last of the Porta 21 grain free I bought him but am considering putting him back on Royal Canin or possibly a mix of the two as his coat isn't as nice as it used to be.

try Aldi - my previous cat was a lover of the 'tray' meals. my previous dog loved all their products - but, she just loved food anyway!

Lisa - Applaws chicken breast comes in flakes and my very fussy Barnes loves it! PAH stocks the small tins at 89p each (and I think there is a discount for buying it in bulk) chicken breast with a very small amount of either rice or cheese added (says which on the can). my local shop does larger cans for just over a pound. I find half of one of these is ample for Barney. no additives and it smells yummy. you can buy from Applaws direct online which may be moneysaving for you. I am still experimenting a bit - I think Barnes diet is a bit 'restricted' so wont buy in bulk yet.
just put Applaws cat food in search box and you should find it.
  • Porta 21 from Zooplus is very similar to Applaws which has the flaky chicken. Its like thin strips of chicken with some rice and chicken broth. Mine loved it and was cheaper than applaws as well.

Not as high in protein as applaws which can be good. Mine and I know a few other peoples cats have been sick after having applaws due to it being rich.

Thanks meritaten and RachRubyD. I've had a look at both and think I may try them next month and see which Gizmo likes. I'm a little concerned though as I've never really seen him eat dry food and since they're both complimentary I'm guessing he'll need dry too?

I've ordered some Harringtons to try him on, thought since it is chicken flavoured he may be more inclined to eat that than Porta 21 and Royal canin. Failing that the next option is to mix the dry in with wet (he'll sometimes eat a slack handfull of Porta 21 mixed in with a pouch and a half wet so might need to up the amount a little).

I feed Barnes his usual dry food during the day and there is ample left down for him to 'help himself'. then about 6.50 he normally 'asks' for his supper which is the wet food. he loves Sheba Turkey in Sauce (Tray) and Chicken or Chicken and Cheese Applaws - these are guaranteed not to upset his tummy. expensive though!
  • Another vote here for the Applaws and also a brand I buy in Sainsbobs- Encore. I mix Oscars dry food ( Harringtons or Applaws) with the wet food so he gets his vitamins:T and won't eat them much alone.
