Argos - after care on broken cross trainer - terrible!

We recently bought a York Aspire cross trainer and bike for around £260 including delivery from Argos which was delivered on 28th June. We used it fine for 3 weeks and then it broke - the flywheel stopped turning properly.

We phoned their after care service and explained the problem. They gave us mobile no of repairman assigned to come fix it, who said after speaking to us he would get some parts delivered (even though he hadn't seen it, seemed odd) The parts took 10 days to arrive, and when we called and texted him to arrange an appointment, we got no response for 3 days, then found out he couldn't come 'til a week later. He came today and announced he had the wrong spares as it was a bearing out not the flywheel, so we could either let him know if we wanted to wait again for spares and another appointment or ask for it to be replaced. We decided a replacement would be better.

Called Argos after care again (I'm boring myself now so well done on sticking with it) and requested this, which they said they could do on Tuesday but couldn't give a time (12-6 vague slot). We both work and can't take afternoon off to wait for it, requested more specific time but they refused. So we asked for a refund. On hearing this they now say we have to wait until Saturday 31st August for it to be collected before they can issue refund 5 days later!

This is now nearly 3 weeks since it broke it has nearly been broken longer than it ever worked! By not issuing a refund until September Argos are sitting on our money and we have no benefit. On top of that the machine was bought to get fit in time for a family holiday in September, so that's now ruined as well.

Any tips would be great, but this is really a piece of advice to say don't buy expensive items from Argos, the saving is not worth the hassle! Once the refund comes I'll gladly spend a bit more at John Lewis or somewhere reputable to get decent after care.

Is it possible to demand an earlier pickup or refund? Seeing as the repairman has now seen it and agrees it is faulty?

That must be some cross trainer if it can 'get you fit' in 2 months
If you bought from JL. I doubt you would have got a refund without having the item returned/collected

John Lewis are fabulous. They are forking out £600 to fix my 2.5 year old tv....it is still taking roughly 3 weeks though. That's the thing with big ticket items. Parts are ordered in and you need specialist repairers.

    What, the holiday is ruined?

Or just the plan to get fit in time for the holiday is ruined?

Best tip is to get outside with the trainers on and start jogging. To say you getting fit because the machine is broken is just ridiculous, there are hundreds of ways to get fit.

You can demand whatever you like, you won't necessarily get it though. Since they've now arranged a Saturday pick up, they would be entirely at liberty to only replace it. Indeed, they would have been at liberty to refuse the replacement and insist on a repair.

Your holiday is ruined because of this?

Christ almighty, get a grip on the real world. What a ridiculous statement.
