Go to user cp at the top of the page.
On the left side click on 'edit options'
Scroll down to 'Miscellaneous options'
First box is 'Message editor interface' click on the down arrow at the bottom of that box and choose 'Standard editor-extra formatting controls'
Then click 'save changes'
Job done, smileys work again.

ah I see what it does, it changes your smilies back to keyboard symbols, thus allowing you to post them. cheers and well done.
