I pointed out that owner occupiers do not make a fuss over painting and do not expect someone else to do the painting after "only" 3 years
based upon the experience of being a LL myself for a property and also having a lodger in my own home. The crockery in my own home was without a blemish when the lodger moved in, now there is not one single plate that is free of chips. people do not take as much care of other peoples possessions as they do of their own, fact, no irrationality there. Prejudice, yes , but based on first hand experience.

Absolute, unadulterated b0ll0x. Your sample of 2, which is anyway biased is utterly meaningless. It's just anecdote and in no way can you apply such anecdotal evidence to a wider situation. Some people don't take as much care of other people's stuff, some people treat it the same as their own and some take better care of it. You cannot generalise on this. Do you understand what the word 'fact' means?

Your wild conclusions certainly don't apply to me for example. I'm currently a tenant and my partner and I look after our home to the same standard as if we owned it (perhaps even moreso, given that that any damage will be charged for). We are professional people and very high earners, not that that makes any difference as I still behaved in exactly the same way when I was fresh out of university and had no money. And to add my own anecdote; most of the places I rented in the UK were left in a better state when I departed.

Perhaps your unfortunate experiences are the result of your attitude? Maybe if you didn't think the worst of people and treat them with contempt, they'd be more likely to make an effort in looking after your possessions? Just a thought!
Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one. :)
