can you recycle knackered shoes?

  • I've just made everyone have a clear out as I couldn't shut the shoe cupboard door. I now have 2 black bin liners of old shoes. :o (mind you only 1 pair is mine)

Is there a 'green' way to dispose of them?

Most of them are out grown but teenager rather than small child. They are a mixture of types - fashion, school, trainers etc. Although there are a few more worn out.

Any ideas most welcome. I keep thinking 'surely there must be something to do with them other than chuck them in landfill' at the tip

It would certainly be worth sending the best to your local charity shop - they might even come and collect for you!

    Otherwise a local jumble sale.

Or the shoe banks as already suggested.

We can put ours in our black recycling box!

Thanks for moving the post. Don't know how I managed not to find this thread :rotfl:

Unfortunately no recycle bins outside our tescos. I will have a look round the other supermarkets to check if they have a shoe bank :)

The charity shop we used to use regularly has unfortunately closed down and the rest are town centre. I've never seen shoes for sale in those.

I'll also double check the recycling box leaflet info which I must have somewhere :o I know we can put clothes out as I did once and had them left so phoned the council who said I was right put them out again.

I don't think ebay for those who love well worn is a good idea. To quote myself.
Most of them are out grown but teenager rather than small child.

They are age probably age 12+ up to my 18 year old daughters. Even the thought of selling them on ebay for other's enjoyment makes me feel ill.

  • There is an OXFAM shoe box at our garden centre ........ it says shoes for resale or re-use ........so I think if knackered......the bin! - if made of leather compostable!

    Hi all,

If you decide to not take advantage of the ebay fetish market to make a few bob then you can take worn out shoes to a charity shop. Many (if not all) sell stuff like that to a rag recycling person along with clothes that aren't fit to sell.
