Replacement car window

Options
My car's driver side quarter light has been broken by a stone. I called Autoglass who wanted just over £240 to replace it. I am hoping someone here is able to recommend me a reliable and cheaper alternative. Anyone?

  • If you know any local car dealers or good independant workshops ask them who they use, if not consult yellow pages or equivalent and find a small local independant windscreen company.

Autoglass need to budget for blanket advertising hence the monopoly money quote..

I expect you'll get a quote nearer the insurance excess from a small indy.

Depending on the car, it could be a tenner from the local scrappy and a ten minute job.

If I felt inclined to trawl scrap yards I wouldn't be asking for a recommendation for an autoglass equivalent.

I thought about asking my local garage but I guess if they add their cut on it won't be that cheap. I usually use a main dealer as the car is only 2 years old.

No no, not your local garage, ask them who they use for windscreens, every trader will have a cheap local windscreen company on tap.
  • cars 2 years old so a pattern windscreen may not be available yet so hence a maindealer price from autoglass who will most likely get it from dealers trade add their % and hence high price.

Do you not have glass cover with your insurance? It doesn't usually impact your no claims bonus etc.
And that my son, is how to waft a towel!

The cost is less than the excess.

It's normally a much lower excess for glass - £50 is quite common I think?

You sure about that. As above, glass excess is separate from your standard excess and is usually around £60-£70.

I'd assumed the OP was female for some reason but anyway, the MSE rulebook says you must play nicely

I'd delete it before some snitch grasses you up to the mods
