Cyclists, have I missed something?

Just wondering as I was crossing a one way street near to my home, a cyclist came hurtling along from the wrong direction (i must admit to not paying much attention to that direction as I know it's one way) and nearly ran into me. I shouted after the person saying it's a one way street and he shouted back saying cyclists are now exempt!

Must admit to not seeing this anywhere so I wonder if any of you reasonable and proficient cyclists can tell me when this came in please? It would be useful to us pedestrians so that we know to look in the direction you would not normally expect any traffic to be coming from.

I actually did 'glance' which is how I managed to avoid him. But that dosn't answer my question.

How useful - I believe the Pope is a catholic also?

Why do people have to make smart @rse comments on this forum instead of answering the question? If you can't contribute then why bother? if you're that bored, my garden needs sorting.... :D

Anyway, now I've made my pointless comment as well - OP, can't say for sure but it sound ludicrous if true, but I guess it's just one of those arrogant t1ts that gives cyclists a bad name....

Surely there would be signage to indicate this? There isn't anything at the location concerned. Also it should be taken into account that unlike a motorised vehicle, a cyclist normally dosn't make a noise to attract your attention.

In the main cyclists are not exempt from the Road Traffic Act and regulations however there are a few roads where they are allowed to travel against the flow of traffic. These roads are clearly marked and, in my experience, there is also a cycle path of a different colour to the road. Two I am aware of are in Aylesbury town centre.

Of course all cyclists should be aware of other road users, which includes pedestrians, and ride accordingly. (and pedestrians aware of others too of course)

Have a look at this map of Walton Street, Aylesbury Use street view to zoom in to see the cycle lane running against the flow of the traffic

Its because cyclists are green and save the planet.... in the same way my toilet saves the planet.

No, he was clearly just arrogant and misinformed.

I'm guessing its down to local authorities
from memory its little blue signs with bikes here

You can have the 'except cycles' uneder the no entry signs

or as simple as a bit of paint on the entrance

I dont see anything on your link regarding cyclist provisions
however theres section of Edinburgh(The meadows,Porty Prom) which still have no cycling signs up that are long since superseded

To me Custardy, that arrangement looks ridiculous and dangerous. The road is simply too narrow for cyclists to safely ride agaisnt the flow of traffic. I think the one that Hotspur referred to is more suitable and adequately marked.
