I know one of the companies I use to work for it was a 75% loading on your premium for an ad claim so it might be worth doing some quotes on a comparison site to see how much it will add to your insurance.

I claimed for OH's laptop a while ago repair was £630 the increase in premiums has been about £180 - £120 each year since and I still have another 3 years left to declare it.

If you are concerned as to how the claim would affect future premiums, do a couple of dummy quotes through the comparison site with and without the claim. Obviously things may have changed by your renewal date but it should give you an idea.

If this is the only claim in the last 3 - 5 years then it might be worth your while but if you go over 2 claims in 3 years you may run into problems getting cover from a mainstream insurer.

You could ring them (as a new customer enquiring about the cover) and speculatively ask if there are any exclusions to the accidental damage cover as regards to TVs, Wii's etc

Below is the link for the policy wordings, I have the standard accidental damage cover. It doesn't mention any exclusions of controllers damaging the tv.
    morethan.com/process/documents/Home_Insurance_Policy_Wording_R00840D_WEB.pdf

I did a live chat as a new customer and asked if a toy or controller is thrown at the tv by a child would it be covered and the reply was yes it would be; that's good news :P

I got the tv inspected and was told it's not worth replacing the led panel and maybe the motherboard could be shorted by the impact on the panel, buying the new equivalent tv would be in the same price region or cheaper rather than replacing the panel and/or motherboard + labour.

The tv is Samsung UE46B8000, current models on the market are the ES8000 (2012 model, approx. £1200) and F8000 (2013 model, approx. £1800)

I did a quote on comparison sites and the difference is around £20-80 which is not bad if they pay out £1800 for a new tv.

I think it's worth making a claim, if they reject the claim I don't have to pay excess and it shouldn't effect future premiums. Any opinions on this?
  • It appears you've done all the research you need to do and come to the conclusion that it is worthwhile making a claim, to which I would agree.

*It is covered, as confirmed by MoreThan (and I can see nothing on their docs that would exclude it).

*You have determined that it is uneconomical to repair (as is the case with most Televisions) so MoreThan will most likely look to replace it.

*You have determined the claims cost is in the region of £1200-1800.

I generally feel if the claim is over £500 then the claim is usually worthwhile making when considering this will affect your premiums and no claims discount for the next 3-5 years.

I would just check with them that the excess isn't huge (ie. it isn't £500!) and also just enquire what the affect will be on the no claims discount (ie. you haven't built up 5 years and will lose it all!). But all in all, I would say it is worthwhile making the claim.

Keep in mind that if you're still unsure whether to make the claim then you can still ask for the claims cost from the insurer before deciding whether you want to accept the settlement. For example, if they say they will replace the TV (either with a voucher or directly) then you can say you would like to know the cost of that before accepting. So, for example, they may offer you vouchers for £1400 at somewhere like Currys and they would let you know that this may cost them £1260 (for example, if they receive a 10% discount). They will also let you know which TV they have based their assessment on so you can take a look at it first to ensure you're happy with the choice. Let them know beforehand if you prefer a brand-for-brand replacement as some insurers will look to offer LG, Sharp or Toshiba.
