Thank you for all your replies. My partner is going to try to ring up tomorrow for me after he has finished work and ask if he can speak on behalf of me if I give them my permission which should only take a second of me saying yes on the phone. Hopefully it will be OK and I will be able to get back onto online banking.

I might get my partner to ask what other contact options they would have for people who struggle to come into branch/speak on the phone and hopefully they can provide me with an email to use if I ever happen to have difficulties otherwise I think I might look at moving to somebody else.

Can you ring them,introduce/identify yourself, then simply ask them if your partner can continue the call on your behalf.
My wifes first language is not English, and this is how we deal with business calls.
My wife and I are in the same situation and we've occasionally done this in the past.

What do you think will happen when you phone them? They aren't going to shout down the phone or something. Isn't it just like having a conversation in real life, except the sound comes from a piece of plastic (the phone) instead of someones mouth?

I know someone who can't do that because of the fear of the unknown. To them it would be like talking to a stranger in the street.

They have caller id, and if family or friends ring them they are fine, but if someone they don't know rings, they find themselves unable to speak, so they don't answer the phone. Same goes for real life - they can't walk into a bank and start talking to a customer services advisor, so they take someone to do the talking for them. Still uncomfortable, but at least it gets the job done.

Would it be possible to change the account to an online one. Once set up, you don't need to speak to anyone.
You may need to speak to change the telephone account to online, but that would be a once only event.
