And as for insurance get it on your mum and dads till your about 20, then it'll drop.
It won't drop all that much, NCB is more important than age, and infact changing postcode can instantly make your quotes £400 cheaper or more expensive (I have known of some people to claim they park their car overnight at a different postcode which can make those big savings - but again this will invalidate policies). Policy fronting is a risk and is illegal - it may seem cheap and a good idea but if an accident happens you're technically uninsured.

I don't want to be hit by an uninsured driver thanks :)

    Try quinn direct and bell.
My daughter is 17 and on a provisional licence. We have insured her Ka for £535 TPFT. That is for her as main driver and DH as named driver. There was no difference in premium for putting him on. This was quinn, bell were over £600 and no-one else came near.
I know boys are more expensive!

Well I was down on my mums insurance from 17, (as were my bro and sis) the car was insured for any driver plus main policy holder(my mum) I had 2 claims through this policy no probs, accidents were my fault, did this till I was 21 and then got my own due to the fact they were gonna put my mums up big time as I'd crashed again, got a quote about £400 cheaper than my mums in my name, when I was 17 this would have cost me at least £600 more than the £400, I hadn't moved house or anything. So something happened from me being 17 to 21??? I had no NCD.
Im just saying I cannot see a problem with being insured through your parents till you're a bit older, everyone I know does it/did it. And as I said I claimed and others claimed on me and we never had probs.

The problem is with ever increasing costs insurance companies are seeing a problem with it and are looking at it more closely than ever now. I had an accident about a year ago and was asked quite a lot of questions around the vehicle and the main drivers etc. It is quite apparent that insurance companies are looking for anyway that they can to reduce the number of payouts and gifting them something like this is only going to make their lives easy.

Don't forget this is not like telling a white lie and nothing will happen, if they invalidate your insurance you will find it very hard to insure again (any kind of insurance), also you could be prosecuted for driving whilst uninsured and sued for all damages that you have caused whilst being uninsured. This could make life very dificult and saving that £600 might suddenly seem a false economy.

The only true economy to make is to live within your means by spending clever, thats proper money saving and we as money savers should not be advocating fraud as a money saving idea.

If there's a few cars in the household, a fleet policy to cover them all is an option and it's allowed my friends son to be able to afford to insure a 2L Subaru Imprezza at 18 years old.

I remember hearing somewhere about a 17 year old just passing their test and paying £12k for insurance on a Subaru Impreza. I presume his parents paid it.

I must admit I don't have anything against the idea of insuring as a named driver to make it cheaper as it does seem a good idea, but it's just the whole risky side of it. + I really do think that if you're insured for 3 years on your parents policy, then get your own policy, it will cost more than if you had got your own policy to start with as you would have 3 years no claims (assuming no accidents). So while cheaper at first it may well be a false economy.

Plus if you keep your car for those three years it will be in your name for three years if you insure it yourself. If your parents insure it they legally have to own it and have to sign it over to you. When you get your own policy this may put up the cost as you can only claim to have owned the car for 0 months 0 years.

If you are aware that if you do policy front you may be asked questions and you and your parents are prepared for it, and what they want to hear, you may be able to blag it and get away with it if you are asked probing questions.
