If you have your heart set on the car maybe it would be worth looking into insuring it in your parents name with you as a named driver, at least for the 1st year or so .... we did this with my OH ... quotes we got for fiat punto 55s
him only - £1200
me & him as named - £627
my dad & him as named - £197
guess which option we took !!Wise men talk because they have something to say, Fools because they have to say something0 -
Meluca your idea, breaches the T+C of the insurance company and if they find out that the main driver is not the policy holder they can void the policy in the event of an accident.
The other problem is at some point this premium will be payable, even if you've had your licence 5 years but still have no NCB the premium will still be high. Bite the bullet and pay the cheapest you can find.0 -
If there's a few cars in the household, a fleet policy to cover them all is an option and it's allowed my friends son to be able to afford to insure a 2L Subaru Imprezza at 18 years old.0

So it might do but how many people do it????
OP dont get a fiat as your first car, you'll regret it, Id id big time, they're rubbish would never buy another one, horrible to drive. And as for insurance get it on your mum and dads till your about 20, then it'll drop.0 -

Some insurance companies now give named drivers NCB !Wise men talk because they have something to say, Fools because they have to say something0 -

Only if they stay with that company.
If they find out you've lied about who is main driver and void your policy, you'll forever be refused insurance as the question "have you ever had a policy cancelled, special conditions, etc.". Does not have a time limit.
It really is not worth lying when it comes to insurance, if you can't afford to pay the premium you can't afford the car.0 -
Also have you taken pass plus? This can reduce your insurance costs by upto 35% and is recognised (sp) by over 60% of insurers. Look here (http://www.theaa.com/drivingschool/passplus.html) this is just the AA's version though so other driving schools/instructors do do it.
As regards the Fiat Punto i was looking at getting one of those when i pass my test but i was told by alot of people that the older models are unreliable. Not saying you should take my words as the truth as im just going on word of mouth but it is worth bearing in mind and do some research online.Offical MSE Fantasy League Member:beer:0 -

That's called insurance fronting and is illegal. If you have an accident questions will get asked and the insurance will be declared null and void landing you in loads of deep s**t. You have to start building a no claims at some point anyway. It will also make any future insurance prohibitively expensive and difficult to get. Read here to see what Kwikfit thinks of policy fronting http://money.guardian.co.uk/insurance_/motor/story/0,,1884126,00.htmlAt the heart of the matter is "fronting" - insurance industry jargon for parents who insure an old car in their own names, and then add their offspring - the real main drivers - to the policy. This is far cheaper than insuring youngsters as main drivers.
Fronting costs motor insurers as much as uninsured drivers - £600m a year or £30 for each insured motorist.
Insurance for young people is expensive for a reason as they are highest risk. Also that's why Citroen Saxo's are expensive to insure, even the lowest insurance group ones, because droves of chavs drive them like complete nutters (and no doubt have more accidents).
Do *NOT* bother with pass plus as many insurers will give hardly any discount and this will not be recouped in insurance savings as it's only valid for a few years.
Now for some advice you want to hearI passed about 6 months ago and am 26. The cheapest insurance for me was https://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk at £680 with the cheapest at confused being around £100 more - TPFT was cheaper than TP only so do check (fully comp was even cheaper with highest excess but if you have a low value car it's not worth it). It's also worth checking lots of cars and not setting your heart on any single type of car as the difference in insurance cost can be vast.
For a good reliable cheap car, cheap to insure, service and run (can get 40+mpg), I would recommend a Skoda Favorit - low mileage ones (40k miles for example) can be had for under £500 very very easily. I don't know of any other cars where such low mileage is available cheaply, although a common problem with these cars is mileometers getting stuck but this would become evident by resetting the counter and checking occasionally that it moves. Some are bought by old people who use them just to go to the supermarket every weekend. Others may have recommendations also0 -

They're listed on https://www.parkers.co.uk but I have noticed often the insurance groups do not match the cost. For example one car in one group will not necessarily have the same insurance cost as another in the same group (not sure why exactly but my guess is the Citroen Saxo driven by a chav scenario, i.e. higher risk). Best way is to look for cars in the lower groups (maybe five or less) then go over to https://www.autotrader.co.uk and look for cars you're interested in, then hit all the details of the cars your interested in on your insurance quote website (many sites let you go back and change the car details and see how this affects the quote.)
Among the cheapest new cars to insure at present will be citroen C1, Toyota Aygo and I think it's the Peugot 106 which are all the same car with different badges and insurance group 1.0
