I have noticed some of the charity shops are putting on SILLY prices now. I was in Oxfam the other day and things were so expensive. Knitting wool was nearly the price of new, I saw a book I fancied and it was £9.99 and a top I rather liked was almost shop price and it was well worn.

And here's why (from The Guardian)............................

One volunteer wrote: "Our costs have spiralled out of control, so much so that Oxfam is in the middle of a crisis. They'll be making large numbers of employees redundant and closing offices all over the country." The problems had been developing over the past four years, she said, during which time Director David Bryer had received salary increases worth at least £25,000.
Another Oxfam volunteer claimed that Bryer had presided over a culture of rising costs, with the result that less than 20p of every £1 earned in Oxfam shops was going to aid projects.
Oxfam director, Barbara Stocking, gets £90,505 a year.

I love to shop in charity shops but won't use Oxfam shops for this very reason.

Have to say though I have seen the workers grabbing all the best things before any one else.

Why not? Presumably they pay for them and after all isn't this a perk of the job?

  • I have been very lucky recently and bought three genuine Diana Von Furstenberg dresses for £7.99 each. I am happy to buy premium brands, cheaper brands are usually overpriced.

I bought a lovely smart brown wool 'Nauge' coat (from Debenhams) recently for less than £5 from PDSA shop window. I don't go for designer names/brands per se etc. I simply buy charity shop clothes if I need and like the item (and has a purpose/use) to me.

I LOVE charity shop shopping - much more diverse and VERY GOOD quality!

On a few occasions, as I've been so pleased (and grateful), I've worn the item back in the shop from where I bought it, and have enthused to the shop staff! Nutty, but I am SO grateful. These clothes tend to be styled more 'classic' and far nicer than todays fashions...

I was not having a go, I used to work in a charity shop. It would be nice for them to leave something nice for the rest of us. Mind you saying that the charity shops around here are not that good (Bradford)

I like charity shops in Halifax and Ilkley. Sorry got a migrane and my spelling is shocking.

Delighted with my latest purchase, a huge china bread crock and three sugar, tea and coffee jars all in a beautiful sky blue, just the colour I wanted for my new kitchen. My son was driving me home and was a bit surprised when I spotted them in the window and shouted "STOP! I need to go in there NOW!!". They were 4.95 for the bread crock and 4.95 for the set of three containers. Now washed and on display.

agh! why is it whenever I don't copy a post before I post it (just incase it says cannot display page)... it says cannot display page. :'(

oh well - I said; I am very jealous of DianneB's fab recent purchase - would go fab in my kitchen too, whenever it gets painted!

I can't understand how people who work for charities get paid so much. If I had a paid job with a charity I would be quite happy to get NMW. And I would love to run a charity shop one day. :)
  • Hi

Not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but here goes!

I will be going to a surprise 60th in a few weeks and while the preference is for no gift, we have been given the option of " a fun gift from a charity shop costing a maximum of £10".

Any suggestions? Realise that it may not be possible to get anything suggested, but at least if I have an idea, I can start looking!

    Thanks

What a brilliant idea wouldn't it be great if more people did this then there would be less pressure on folk to overspend and the charity shops would pull in more money.I do have a good look throughout the year for small gifts for my grandchildren to wrap up for their teachers ect as it seems all the kids have to find a present for teacher and TA and as my DD has five children it comes a bit heavy for her at times .
