BoS debit card sent 6 months earlier than expiry date

My son works abroad at the moment but still has his BoS account in the UK. Redirected mail comes to me. Just received a new debit card yesterday but he says his current one doesn't expire till February.
There's no explanation as to why it's been sent around 6 months early. Does anyone have a possible explanation?

What is the 'Start date' on the new card?
He can of course use the existing card until expiry.0 -
Maybe his new card has more/or fewer facilities than his old card? e.g. they may have upgraded or downgraded him?0

Old one was a Visa Debit card as is the new one. The only difference I can see between his card and mine (same bank account) is the contactless symbol. I don't know if his old card had it though.
EDIT - just asked him and no the previous one doesn't have the contactless symbol either.0 -
Be aware sometimes old cards expire after 30 days of new one being issued.
I would recommend just posting the new card to him aboard keep things nice and simple.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

Yes I said earlier that it would expire in 30 days according to the letter enclosed with the card.I would recommend just posting the new card to him aboard keep things nice and simple.
He wants me just to hang onto it until his new credit card arrives in a month or two. He doesn't use the debit card at the moment and there is no instruction to activate it.0 -

The card may not need activing if its not mentioned.
I would personally just send it regardless of whether they use it or not.
Otherwise their could be another thread on the horizon titled "son left abroad with no access to cash".Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0
